Lifecycle of the Cordyceps Sinensis: Not sinful as many argued.
The lifecycle of Cordyceps sinensis begins with the release of microscopic spores from its fruiting body, a small, dark stalk that emerges from the ground. These spores are dispersed into the air and eventually land on the underground caterpillars of ghost moths. When a spore comes into contact with a caterpillar, it adheres to its body and begins to infiltrate it. Gradually, the fungus grows within the caterpillar, feeding on its internal tissues until the caterpillar ultimately dies.
After the caterpillar's death, the fungus continues to develop, transforming the caterpillar's body into a hardened, mummified shell. With the arrival of spring, the fungus pushes a stalk, or fruiting body, through the caterpillar's head, which emerges above the soil surface. Once mature, this fruiting body releases new spores into the environment, which are then carried by the wind to infect other caterpillars.
This process indicates that the caterpillar is already deceased by the time it becomes Cordyceps sinensis. Therefore, the harvesting of Cordyceps should not be viewed as an unethical practice (Sinful), as some have argued.
