Serotonin is most commonly known as your ‘happy hormone’ but it’s also your internal regulator for mood, sleep, and appetite. The crew at the valley made a Serotonin menu when you need a little ‘pick me up’!

While mindfulness and sunlight are perfect, you’ll notice an oddly specific smoothie in the mix! The good news is - you can also set up a foundation of joy in the kitchen with your smoothies 😌

‘Mood-map’ your day with us - smoothie edition 🍌

• Pumpkin Seeds (Pepitas): These are one of the best plant-based sources of Tryptophan, the amino acid your body uses as a precursor to produce serotonin. They are also packed with Zinc and Magnesium, which help the brain manage stress and stay resilient.

• Bananas: Often called ‘nature’s happy fruit,’ bananas contain Tryptophan, but their real secret is Vitamin B6. Your body requires B6 to actually convert that tryptophan into serotonin. Plus, they provide a steady source of carbohydrates, which helps the tryptophan cross the blood-brain barrier.

Combine this with a liquid of choice and perhaps a sweetener if you need then, a bare foot walk and smiling meditation. You’re set for a happy day! Save this for days when you could do with another smile 🥰

In many wisdom traditions, joy (ananda in Sanskrit) is considered our natural state, often obscured by mental clutter. In other words, ananda isn’t something we find; it’s what’s left when we let go of everything that isn’t us.

You can tell if your actions are truly for your Highest Self by considering if they offer you long term happiness/joy. Mindfulness, meditation, yoga, journaling and whole food eating are often classed as ‘boring’ but that’s only because we are so prone to a fast-paced, value-less way of living. When you truly immerse in these ancient practices and basic care of the human body and mind, an eternal joy is found.

Ready for the leap? Come for a mindful life reset at our Govinda Valley Ashram just 1 hour south of Sydney. Your ‘more joyful you’ awaits 😌🧘‍♂️🌳

Prana is your bridge between the body and the soul. When you master the breath, you can master the mind. By consciously pausing, we create space for stillness to settle in. There’s infinite breathwork or pranayama practices across spiritual traditions. We’ll explore Sama Vritti today:

The Practice: Box Breathing (Sama Vritti)
This is a simple, grounding technique to regulate your nervous system and build focus through gentle retention (breath holds).
• Inhale: Slowly for a count of 4.
• Hold (Antara Kumbhaka): Gently retain the breath for a count of 4.
• Exhale: Smoothly for a count of 4.
• Hold (Bahya Kumbhaka): Pause at the bottom of the exhale for a count of 4.

Repeat for 3–5 rounds. Notice how your mind quiets in the “gap” between the breaths.

Why move into a dull day when you can move into an incredible day? Take this positivity menu and read on for a breakdown of some of your positivity practices:

108 gratitudes - This is a lot easier than it sounds! Gratitude is scientifically proven to release Dopamine and Serotonin (your feel good hormones) as well as physically change your brain matter to ‘wire’ you into becoming better at seeing the ‘good’ in life! Every day we take so many arrangements for granted. The running water that saves you a 30 min walk to the well, the kettle which has you feeling toasty with your morning tea, your alarm without which you may wake late and rush out the house, your phone which helps you stay connected with beautiful friends and family, your local barista who always perfectly prepares your order or that funny grumpy neighbour that always makes you laugh without realising it. There is so much to be grateful for in the day if you simply stopped to appreciate.

Otherwise, tapping into a common Psych tool (Behavioural Activation) with your favourite song, the wardrobe as your audience and a little boogie will surely do the trick.

How long will you keep living in your comfort zone? Come within, seek solitude and embrace the unknown during your evening routine, weekend getaway or Ashram mini gap year.

Satsang isn’t a gathering; the term is actually derived from the Sanskrit terms Sat (truth), and Sangha (community or association). It is the practice of ‘associating with Truth.’ When we sit with those who are on the path to truthfulness and introspection, their stillness becomes our own.

This is because we as energy beings are always shaping and are shaped by the energy around us. Ashrams were specifically created because ancient seekers and seers saw this pattern. They realised they could not progress so effectively in an environment opposed to their values, so they left common society sought equally earnest seekers, and studied, practiced and soul-searched together.

As they say, if you spend time with 10 alcoholics, you will be the 11th. So decide what you want and surround yourself with people who water your soul and seek what you seek.

🌿 Sophia’s Journey at Govinda Valley Ashram & Yoga School 🌿

Sophia spent years searching for a community she could truly belong to. It wasn’t until she arrived at Govinda Valley that she realised community isn't about shared beliefs or common goals. It’s about love, care, and the freedom to grow as individuals. 💛

Through seva (selfless service), early morning sadhana (personal practice), and the simple joy of being together, Sophia discovered the beauty of true connection. 🌸

Sophia’s experience is a reminder that community is not something you search for, but something you create together. Check out her full story in our latest blog post! 🌿✨

🍛 From Plate to Purpose ✨

We’re often asked what happens to our leftovers.

The good news is that nothing goes to waste.

After our meals, food is carefully packed and frozen, then shared with local charities who distribute them to those in need. Some portions even find their way to a local café, where they are offered in exchange for a small donation.

It’s a small practice, rooted in care, respect, and gratitude.

What goes around truly comes around. 💞

As the year gently unfolds, many of us are already noticing where our energy feels scattered or stretched.

At Govinda Valley Ashram, we work with the practice of sankalpa, a guiding intention that helps us recognise what to prioritise and what to let go of. This reflection is an invitation to pause, even now, and realign with what truly matters.
