Long post alert: one for the racers.

Watching DH national Champs this afternoon highlighted a few things for me. From under 17 through to elite, the level is higher than it’s ever been. But when you pay close attention to the details, there’s so many small things lacking. In a sport decided by tenths, if not hundreds of a second, every movement, every split second decision counts, and while there are many impressive performances there was so many things left on the table. And all this from what I saw just watching the live stream. Missing a pump here, a pedal stroke there, not opening a turn on entry as much as possible, all time left behind. The bigger picture shows the gains and the improvement comes from the day in and day out preparation, the diet, the warmup, the mental side, getting the details dialled.

It’s still the small details of preparation and optimising them that keeps me up at night wondering with my racers.

While I had my years and I wouldn’t change anything I’ve done, I can’t help I think how things would’ve been if I would have known what I know now, and being able to apply that to my training and preparation, right from my junior years, so many years trying to figure it out.

What bridges that gap isn’t more talent or harder training in isolation, its the small things built through years of deliberate practice, dialled in daily preparation, nutrition, warm-up routines, mental awareness , recovery, and process optimization. It takes dedication and commitment, but when it all comes together, things don’t get much more satisfying.

I make almost every coaching session start this way, no distractions, pure focus. Getting the core basics dialled before moving to the dirt

Want just a touch more confidence to step up your jumping game and progress to that bigger set?

4 easy steps

1- start small and build up steadily, don’t rush things until you’re ready
2- correct body positioning and timing is huge. It’s like a dance move. A series of body movements done in the right order with the right timing. Relaxed and calm, shifting your weight down low with elbows wide, ready to spring upwards for that pop at the top of the lip
3. Let the bike do it’s thing in the air, stay relaxed, and slowly shift your weight forwards again to allow the nose to drop to hit that perfect backside
4. If unsure of the speed you need , ask someone who can get through them if you can follow them to make sure your speed is right. Limiting the unknown factors can be a big help.

Something that takes a lot of time and repetition to get fully comfortable and confident with, but also one of the funnest things to do on 2 wheels.
So get out there this weekend and build towards that set you want to hit!

Corners aren’t one-size-fits-all — the “perfect” line depends on your speed, the terrain, your bike setup, and how confident you’re feeling that day.
Today we’re breaking down 3 ways to approach and ride a corner — all effective, just for different riders and situations:

1. Full Inside�Dive straight to the apex early. Shortest path, tight radius perfect for slow-speed control. Great for beginners building confidence or loamy/steep turns where grip is key.�But watch out, too much speed and it can wash out, especially on the exit

2. Wide Setup and Cut Low�Enter wide to set up momentum, drop in low to the inside mid corner, then power out with drive. Takes extra thought and skills to pick the point of the corner to cut down, which makes things tricky, but can allow an early exit to get back on the pedals earlier.

3. Full Outside�Stay high the whole way — hug the outer edge throughout. Lessens the overall Radius for maxiumum speed. Often the best option if you fully commit!
