Temple Grandin's Cattle Perception Research — Applied to Agri-Vis Workwear .

Dr. Temple Grandin is an animal scientist and professor at Colorado State University, and the author of more than
60 peer-reviewed papers on livestock behavior. Her foundational paper, Behavioral Principles of Livestock
Handling (Professional Animal Scientist, 1989, with updates through 2018), established that cattle are
dichromats — their eyes carry only two types of color-sensing cones, tuned to yellowish-green (around 552–555
nm) and blue-purple (around 444–445 nm) light, compared to three cone types in humans.
This means bright colours like fluorescent yellow do not register to cattle with anywhere near the vividness they do to a person.
Grandin traces the real trigger for fear and balking to contrast and sudden movement, not hue. Her papers
describe how dichromatic vision may heighten sensitivity to abrupt visual change, activating the amygdala, the
brain's fear center. In practice, this is why cattle balk at drain grates, hose lines, shadows across a chute floor,
and shiny or dangling objects — not because of what color those objects are, but because of the sharp
light-to-dark or textural edge they create.
Grandin has also documented that cattle have wide, near-panoramic
vision exceeding 300 degrees but relatively weak depth perception at ground level, which makes them depend
even more heavily on contrast and motion cues to judge whether something in their path is safe to cross.
This research directly shaped Grandin's famous curved chute designs, which use solid sides and diffuse,
shadow-free lighting specifically to remove sharp contrast from an animal's field of view rather than to control
color. The same logic that improved slaughter-plant and feedlot handling facilities applies just as well to what a
handler wears while working around cattle.
A blended-edge design: the high-vis colour fades gradually into the pattern rather than meeting it in a hard, straight-edged line —
softening exactly the kind of sharp contrast Grandin's research flags.
The Fix: Blend, Don't Strip Colour
High-vis colour keeps the wearer safe; it isn't the problem Grandin's findings point to. The fix is softening how a
design's dark areas meet the bright base — not removing the design or the colour itself. Grandin's own handling
guidelines call for uniform, diffuse illumination and the elimination of shadows and bright spots in facilities; the
same principle, applied to fabric, means favoring gradual tonal transitions over sharp, block-edged graphics.
● Use gradients and feathered edges instead of hard, block-edged cutouts.
● Avoid dense, dark masses.
● Blend colour-to-colour (e.g. green into gold) rather than dark straight into bright white/fluoro.
● Skip glossy/reflective fabric — glare mimics the sudden movement Grandin identifies as a startle trigger.
● Move slowly and predictably around cattle — per Grandin, motion combined with contrast is the real trigger,
more so than any single color choice.
