🏆🥇 CHILDREN’S BOOKSELLER OF THE YEAR 🥇🏆

We literally could not be any prouder or more excited to announce that our very own Kasey Chambers has been crowned Children’s Bookseller of the Year for 2026.

Presented by at the gala dinner, Kasey has been a stalwart of our children’s programs since she started here in 2020, she convenes our kids book clubs, runs our Monday story time sessions and is entirely responsible for a new and exciting initiative around literacy that we can’t wait to share details with you.

But, as always, the best words come from .chambers herself, these below are taken from her acceptance speech.

‘What a privilege it is to be named the Children’s Bookseller of the Year for 2026. Thank you to the ABA and to Hardie Grant for recognising the importance of children’s specialists in indie bookshops. It is an honour to be recognised alongside Fiona, Janine and Mischa - congratulations to you all.

Our work as Children’s Specialists is important. Not because building readers today ensures the longevity of our industry.

But because in elevating the stories and talents of brilliant authors and artists we show our children what it means to be human. To love deeply, to act courageously, to demand truth and justice for the oppressed, to think independently and to act with integrity. We show them that we value the types of creativity and artistry that don’t come from a chat bot, and we value the voices of those who have been silenced. May we never underestimate the power of a child, a book, and the imagination that connects them to a bigger, kinder and more just world.‘

♥️ MATILDA BOOKSHOP CHARITY DAY♥️

Tomorrow is our monthly charity day where 15% of the value of each book sold, either in the shop or via our website, is donated to an organisation we believe in.

Choosing to buy your books from us tomorrow, you'll help us support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation's Book Supply program, which delivers free, culturally relevant books to remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities across Australia. Through the power of stories, Book Supply helps children, families and Communities access books that reflect their cultures, languages and identities, creating opportunities for learning, connection and a lifelong love of reading.

Some books stay with you long after you’ve shelved them for the last time.

We asked our booksellers to share their favourite Penguin Modern Classic; the novel they return to, recommend endlessly, and occasionally think about while staring into the distance.

Should any of these recommendations make their way onto your ever-growing TBR, buy any two Penguin Classics, and you’ll receive a Penguin Classics bundle: a tote bag, a Penguin Classics pin, and a copy of Reader’s Odyssey.

Our picks:
❤ Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan
❤ The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim
❤ Delta of Venus by Anaïs Nin
❤ Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
❤ The Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector
❤ Copenhagen Trilogy by Tove Ditlevson
❤ Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin
❤ The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Word on the street is we’ve expanded our Penguin Modern Classics collection 🐧🩵 No more hunting high and low for your favourite classics or wondering if your literary tastes are too niche—we’ve got you.

So whether you’re after the entire catalogue of Woolf, Baldwin, or Lispector, or that one classic you’ve been meaning to read for years, there’s now even more to browse.

And because one Penguin Classic often leads to another, when you buy any two Penguin Classics, you’ll receive a Penguin Classics bundle: a tote bag, a Penguin Classics pin, and a copy of A Reader’s Odyssey featuring yours truly ❤️

Your TBR may never recover.

It was the best of times, it was the most bookish of times, it was the age of losing yourself in a book, it was the season of staying up far too late for “just one more chapter." These are the books that have done that for us recently ❤

Pictured: booksellers who have reached the end of autumn with their favourite books, and who have been voraciously reading books written by humans, while still making time to marvel at the red leaves adorning the outside of the shop. Just human things ✨
