We are hiring: Firewood Processor

Firewood Processor – Sawmill Position

We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Firewood Processor to join our sawmill team. This is a hands-on role involving the processing, handling, and preparation of firewood for sale and distribution. This will be a part time or casual, flexible role, probably extending past winter into further roles within the sawmill for the right candidate. Our firewood processor is capable of producing up to 30T a day so the right candidate will need experience in their operation.

Key Responsibilities:

-Operating firewood processing machinery safely and efficiently
-Chainsaw operation for cutting and trimming timber
-Handling, stacking, and moving firewood
-Assisting with general sawmill duties as required
-Maintaining a clean and safe work environment
-Following all workplace health and safety procedures

Essential Requirements:

-Current Chainsaw Operator Ticket (mandatory)
-Previous firewood processor experience
-Strong work ethic and reliability
-Physically fit and capable of manual labour
-Ability to work independently and as part of a small team
-Commitment to safe work practices

Desirable (but not essential):

-Bobcat / Skid Steer Ticket
-Experience in sawmill, forestry, or firewood processing work
-Machinery operation experience

Schulte Sawmill proudly supplies some of Australia’s biggest mining companies with critical truck and mine site bearers. Custom work needs to be undertaken at our end to each piece of timber to ensure when it gets to a remote mine site it slips perfectly into place. These guys are about to start their 6000km journey to remote far north WA.

WE ARE HIRING: Sawmill Operator

We are seeking an experienced Head Sawmiller / Sawmill Operator to lead daily milling operations in a small, practical, production-focused sawmill environment. Schulte Sawmill is a botique, low volume high quality Ironbark Sawmill, producing green and dry lumber as well as various Ironbark moulded profiles.

This is a hands-on role manual role suited to someone who enjoys cutting beuatiful timber, running machines, solving problems on the fly, and taking ownership of output quality and workflow. You’ll be responsible for operating and overseeing milling, maintaining equipment, and ensuring safe, efficient production.

About the role

You will:

-Operate and manage daily sawmilling operations

-Break down logs accurately and efficiently for maximum recovery

-Set up, adjust, and maintain milling equipment

-Perform routine servicing and troubleshooting

-Maintain quality control of finished timber

-Coordinate workflow and prioritise jobs

-Follow and uphold safe work practices

-Work independently with minimal supervision

Essential skills & experience

-Proven experience operating sawmills or portable mills

-Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills

-Ability to work physically outdoors in a rural environment

-Good judgement with timber grading and recovery

-Reliable, self-directed, and practical mindset

-Strong and fit for manual labour

Highly desirable

-Lucas Mill experience

-Kara Sawmill experience

-Moulding and dressing operations (weinig 6 and 8 spindle moulders)

-Kiln Experience

-Machinery maintenance or mechanical trade background

-Forklift, bobcat or wheel loader ticket/experience

-Leadership or team supervision experience

They’re going up! 😍 With careful precision from Terry Duffs Crane Truck and the boys from CSK Carpentry 14 trusses made their way to site and were installed.

Weighing in at almost 600kgs each, these impressive trusses constructed from 200x100 Red Ironbark members and 10mm steel custom plate will make for an impressive entertaining space for the next 100 years. Unreal work from our friends at CSK Carpentry and DTB Fabrications! Can’t wait to see them up!

And that’s a wrap! Thankyou to all our customers for another successful year of helping you with your Ironbark projects!

We’ll be taking an unusually extended break this year to spend some quality time with the fam.

We’ll be closed from this Friday the 12th until the 5th of January.

Continuing on with our journey this month on how your timber is produced, today, the kiln!

Green timber is stacked inside our computer controlled environment, probes assembled in various spots amongst the boards, curtain pulled across the pack, hot air drawn thru the boards and the the kiln will tell us when the boards are perfectly dry (normally 3 weeks).

Kiln drying stabilises and removes excess water from the boards meaning less movement and shrinkage.

Fun fact - Ironbark gets stronger as it drys! It will move from F17 to F22 (and sometimes F27) the drier it gets!

Another fun fact, Schulte Sawmills kilns run entirely offset by solar and battery.
