Readers, today we turn 16 and what a ride it has been! We are enjoying such wonderful memories, from the old shop with those memorable stairs (just right for sitting) to our book clubs, quiz nights, costume parties and kid activities, our COVID-19 "pivot" era, sausage sizzles, Lego comps and of course our memorable "human conveyor belt" move of tens of thousands of books up the road to our big and even more beautiful new shop.

Thank you to all the publishers, authors, fellow booksellers and of course readers of Perth for ensuring we have survived and thrived all these wonderful years.

Thanks so much to Meg Caddy for popping in to the store to sign their fourth and NEW Young Adult novel A Flash in the Dust!

A Flash in the Dust, recommended for ages 14+, is set in 1899 at Fremantle Asylum, where for three years Gilberta Brady has kept quiet and stayed out of trouble, hoping to soon be released.

But when Norah Devaney screams into the ward with revenge in her heart and a story no-one believes, Brady’s carefully guarded peace is shattered.

On the run and out of options, they collide with Malkar and Kedalak, Nyungar brothers on their own journey home. They form an unlikely gang of bushrangers and embark on a dangerous mission: track down the man who killed Norah’s mum.

But the Whistling Man is hunting them too.

This is a gripping historical thriller with a dash of q***r romance – think the bushranger version of Sarah Waters' Fingersmith.

Can we also take this opportunity to congratulate Meg on their strong winter jacket game 👌

🐧Eric the penguin's pick this month is a taut, sultry novel about rivalry, obsession and how far we are willing to go to get what we truly desire ...

It's the summer of 1957 and Max, a piano prodigy, is on a sold-out concert tour. His beautiful twin sister, Natasha, serves as his manager and minder. But despite Natasha's careful planning, he begins, for the first time in his career, to make mistakes on stage. Upending his schedule to seek a cure in Paris, Max sets up the pair in the sprawling mansion of a handsome and wealthy count. But Henri is more than just a patron of the arts; he has also been - unknown to Max - Natasha's lover.

Freed from the familiar dynamic of manager and talent, Natasha's simmering resentment and Max's deep insecurity turn into a rivalry, as the two vie for Henri's attention. While Henri woos Natasha in galleries and cafes during the day, it is Max's playing that draws him from bed each night.

As the twins compete, the fractures in their already vulnerable relationship start to show, with devastating consequences for both.

This month, Eric's offering you 10% off!

Got a 4-6-year-old just getting into chapter books? This cute, funny and original series has sumptuous, adorable full-colour illustrations on each page, gentle positive messages without being preachy. Another thing we love is that they're not aimed at/marketed towards a particular gender like so many kids' series, and the chapters are short enough that a request for "just one more" is not going to break your mental bank!

🚶‍♀️We have a truly enormous range of kids' books and we're open all weekend so come and see us at 567 Beaufort Street Mount Lawley!

Hours:

Saturday 9.30-9

Don't forget to read this weekend! As the great Alain de Botton says:

"We wouldn’t need books quite so much if everyone around us understood us well. But they don’t. Even those who love us get us wrong. They tell us who we are but miss things out. They claim to know what we need, but forget to ask us properly first. They can’t understand what we feel — and sometimes, we’re unable to tell them, because we don’t really understand it ourselves. That’s where books come in. They explain us to ourselves and to others, and make us feel less strange, less isolated and less alone. We might have lots of good friends, but even with the best friends in the world, there are things that no one quite gets. That’s the moment to turn to books. They are friends waiting for us any time we want them, and they will always speak honestly to us about what really matters. They are the perfect cure for loneliness. They can be our very closest friends."

Pop in and find a book that gets you this weekend!

A new book from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is always cause for celebration! The cook and broadcaster who brought us River Cottage is such a brilliant food writer that just reading his books is like getting a big warm hug on top of a good meal.

Now Hugh turns his formidable talents to showing us how simple and delicious it can be to get more fibre in your diet. Many of the recipes use only one pan and can be on the table within half an hour. They're plant-forward, thrifty and thoughtful, but exciting and delicious too.

Alongside handy swaps and additions for most recipes, Hugh also shares his go-to list of store-cupboard essentials to amp up the flavour and pack in the fibre count for any dish.

Did we mention we are fans?

Pop in this weekend for a copy, we are open on Monday too, and if you like Clarkson's Farm, check out the Escape to River Cottage series, the original and the best! Thank us later 😉
