Onto a hydraulic pump overhaul on this MF35 for a friend of mine.....first job on the tools in 2026.
Went to pull the PTO shaft from the tractor to lift the hydraulic pump from the casing, but couldn't budge it using the conventional tool I'd usually use. (rolling head bar & block of wood).
So ended up fitting a trusty quick release yoke to the PTO shaft and with a little gentle persuasion from the MF148, pulled it out with an almighty thud!
Rust around the seal housing wasn't the culprit, but I reckon this slightly distorted outer bearing case wouldn't have helped.
Around a thou & a half (in the old money) of interference as seen by the shiny witness marks on opposite sides of the race is quite evident.
This original English manufactured bearing with the part number XM45XG threw the blokes at Motion, but did come up on some other websites........probably the original from factory in 1960.
The new NTN replacement back went back in it's place with a gentle push with the palm of the hand.

So back into the MF148 atm.....After sorting the "lack of drive" problem to the PTO shaft & moving on those nesting spar...

So back into the MF148 atm.....
After sorting the "lack of drive" problem to the PTO shaft & moving on those nesting sparrows in the bell-housing, the front axle is receiving some much needed treatment.
The 2nd series or "upgraded" 135's released in 1971, & the then new model 148 tractor (1972), came with an upgraded front axle arrangement, that many will testify was a down-grade.
The earlier "swept" or "bent" front axle had it's share of problems, usually caused by over-loading the axle, or solely thru a lack of maintenance.......
But the later "square" axle also had it's fair share of dramas, again, due to a lack of maintenance, but also by a design fault.
The axle beam from factory was never fitted with full length support for the pin, thru the width of the beam. This in turn, led to premature wear in the rear section of the beam, where the only "support" for the pin, was the narrow end section of the beam.
This tractor's axle and beam however, has had an upgrade at some stage, primarily because the pin's locking bolt has come loose, and the axle pin has "walked out" of the support housing, breaking the housing.

This well maintained MF353, sold thru the dealership I worked for in Nambour Queensland back in the early 90's, is still...

This well maintained MF353, sold thru the dealership I worked for in Nambour Queensland back in the early 90's, is still going strong today, albeit, needing just a little love atm......
It's not unusual for machinery to chalk up more than 10,000 hours, but what makes this little tractor unusual, is that the electronic dash is still fully functional, and reading off nearly 12,500 hours.
While keeping the Blackall Range countryside tidy, it's spent most of it's working life driving a 6 foot PAGE slasher, hence the "Farmerfication" done to the RHS, above the rear of the footstep!

To suit your earlier model Landini Massey Fergusons, this combined fuel/temperature gauge fits all 104 and 204 Italian series Masseys, as well as the UK & French built 600 series.
Equivalent to OEM part numbers - 3305 418M91 & 1825 117M91.
Tractors include 154, 174, 184, 194, 254, 274, 294, 675, 698, 698T and 699 tractors.

So this hard to find 1985 Massey Ferguson 264 Turbo has been an ongoing workshop job for nine weeks or so now.
Back in June, a friend & local Massey collector picked up this machine as a non runner which had stopped in the field, & was parked up outside a shed for some time.
Before it arrived here, we figured it either had turbocharger or injector pump problems or possibly something simpler, like a failed head gasket, as the 3 cylinder Perkins engines are prone to.
But the sight of a rusted off muffler sitting loose on the footplate, left me thinking there maybe more to the story......
With an injector removed, a camera inserted and a quick look inside a cylinder, told us much of the story.
It certainly did stop because of a failed head gasket, but much of the damage had occurred after.
Condensation had taken it's toll on the engine's internals, and once stripped & mountains blue silicone scraped away from almost everywhere, the cylinder block was found to be cracked into the bargain.........
So, to say it's been a challenge to rebuild this engine from scratch, would be an understatement.
From Alfin pistons that had been topped & the original block decked many times over successive rebuilds, to seized injector nozzles that couldn't be sourced new & were reclaimed the old fashioned way by lapping, this engine rebuild has been one monumental challenge.......

So I'm a glutton for punishment.......While others run in the opposite direction from these Standard 23C powered FE35's....

While others run in the opposite direction from these Standard 23C powered FE35's..... all I see is a challenge.....especially when they're priced right!!
Rob & I picked up these gems from Gayndah (Qld) over the weekend. Buying them sight unseen, makes me more of a whipping boy I reckon, but I was actually pleasantly surprised when I saw them up close......at this stage of the game anyway!!
One is your standard, run of the mill Goldbelly Ferguson, single stage clutch jobby, with the button release top hood panel....... with the most saleable part, probably being the BareCo hoop type R.O.P.S.
The other tractor is a 59' model MF35, with the swivel latch release type hood panel, dual clutch but it does have one difference that I've read about, but never seen.......a cylinder head with four glow-plugs.
But it still has a thermostart in the intake manifold???
The 23C engine itself appears to have been painted a yellow color at some stage, and maybe a transplant......
I read somewhere that 23C's sold in the U.S. were all imported with this type of head, but I've never seen one on any FE's or MF'35's to date in my travels in Australia......

Massey Ferguson "Kontak" double remote spool bank set up - $550.00 inc GST.
Came from a working MF148 a while back, these are in good working order.
The valve bank was capped when removed and the spools are in very good condition.
Mounting plate, all hardware and hoses are included.
These will fit all 100, 200, 500 and 600 series Masseys with an auxiliary hydraulic pump and capped PTO shift cover fitted.
Pickup is from North Arm, Sunshine Coast, Queensland, but happy to post Australia wide if you pick up the tab.
