Taking a moment to sing & play the Handpan in the harp workshop whilst the suns shining in.

I am stringing up a 31 string harp that’s built from a beautifully grained local camphor laurel.
Currently the strings are settling before a full set of Camac levers will be fitted.
Sadly the person who had commissioned this harp has pulled out, meaning that this harp will actually be a very rare “Buy It Now” without the waitlist option - I look forward to sharing some photos in a few weeks time.

Let me take you on a short harp journey with this custom black 36-string harp - my most recently finished piece.
In the brief moments I have with a finished harp before it goes to the owner, the song I’m playing has come through this harp in a moment of deep connection.
It’s been a long, patient build, so to find something that flows directly through me and the harp is a very beautiful experience.
The harp along with all my other instruments I play are healing tools, I have walked in union with my collection of instruments through deep grief and loss in my life. My intention is to share this deep space of music with those that are willing to try music as a therapy for a connection to a deeper space within where all else falls away and a deep sense of clarity to the divine is made.
Moments like these are some of the many great blessings I experience through building these ancient instruments.
I don’t play the harp in a strictly traditional way or follow formal hand techniques, although I do value them at certain points as they help to open up my improvising capabilities. I enjoy playing between nails and fingers, good technique clearly opens up one’s playing, and this is something I’ll continue to learn and deepen over time.
I feel a strong connection to all the strings and the broad possibility that this gives me to express myself.

Custom black 36 string harp fitted with Camac Levers.

Timbers including, African Wenge, Western red cedar, Jarrah along with black Japan stain.
The African wenge is completely natural without stain, an incredible dark piece of timber - it’s hard like stone.

In the beginning I was quite cautious about using stain, but I’m really happy with the way this harp has turned out, I love the black stain. One of a kind 🪉
