Newman — mining heritage, public art and a winning quiz team!

Newman really impressed us with the amount of public art woven throughout the town.

From Stan and Ella and the much-loved kangaroos to the Artists Park and the many sculptures dotted around town, there was always something creative to discover. The town’s strong mining identity is unmistakable, with large machinery and industrial elements forming part of the landscape and local story.

A real highlight of our visit was Martumili Artists at the East Pilbara Arts Centre. The gallery holds an extraordinary selection of artwork and represents many artists from across the region. We were warmly welcomed by the staff, who looked after us beautifully while we explored the gallery.

I purchased two beautiful artworks by Sylvia Wilson and Kerri-Anne Wilson. I didn’t realise when I selected them that the artists were sisters—or that they were both working in the studio that day! It was such a lovely surprise to meet them, have a yarn and learn a little more about their work.

Before leaving, we left a Lions fruit cake with the artists and team to enjoy.

We also managed to fit in a visit to a local op shop, where we proudly added a Pilbara Art Collective poster to the community noticeboard, before heading along to quiz night and joining a lovely group of Newman locals. We clearly chose our teammates well—because we won!

Newman gave us such a wonderful mix of public art, community, mining heritage and Pilbara hospitality. There will certainly be plenty of public artworks and creative places from Newman featured on the Pilbara Art Map.

PILBARA ROAD TRIP | KARIJINI

We spent another beautiful few hours exploring Karijini before continuing our journey to Newman.

Our first stop was the Karijini Visitor Centre, which is absolutely worth a visit. The exhibitions share stories of the landscape, culture, history and natural environment in such an engaging way. It is a special place in its own right and one we are looking forward to including on the Pilbara Art Map.

From there, we headed to Fortescue Falls. There are plenty of steps to navigate, but the views and cascading water make the journey worthwhile. We then continued along the trail to the peaceful Fern Pool, where my road-trip companion Francine enjoyed a refreshing swim surrounded by the extraordinary colours and beauty of Karijini.

A few more unforgettable Pilbara moments before getting back on the road to Newman. The deeper we travel through this region, the more there is to discover—through its landscapes, stories, culture and creative places.

Exploring Tom Price and Karijini

Today’s Pilbara road trip took us around Tom Price and into the extraordinary landscapes of Karijini National Park.

We began at the Tom Price Visitor Centre, where we left plenty of Pilbara Art Collective postcards in preparation for our website launch on 1 September. It is wonderful to see our launch materials beginning to make their way across the region.

We also visited the Nintirri Centre, including the community centre and op shop, before exploring the Tom Price Arts Hub, where we discovered some beautiful local artwork.

One of the artists whose work we saw at the Arts Hub is also one of our new Pilbara Art Collective founding members. We were fortunate to visit their studio later in the day, where they generously showed us more of their work and shared their creative practice.

I’m really looking forward to seeing their art represented on the new Pilbara Art Collective platform. Watch this space!

No visit to Tom Price would be complete without checking out the enormous mining haul truck and the bronze kangaroo sculptures at the town centre.

The kangaroos form part of the Watercourse Wildlife sculpture series by Joan Walsh-Smith and Charles Smith of Smith Sculptors, commissioned by the Shire of Ashburton.

From there, we travelled into Karijini National Park and visited Oxer Lookout and Joffre Gorge Lookout. The scale, colour and beauty of the landscape were breathtaking—a powerful reminder of how deeply creativity in the Pilbara is connected to place.

We are staying in Tom Price for two nights and will be heading back into Karijini tomorrow to explore more before continuing our road trip to Newman.

Another memorable day of meeting people, discovering local creativity and gathering stories and photographs from across the region.

More coming soon.

A creative discovery in Paraburdoo ❤️

We only had a short stop in Paraburdoo, but we were thrilled to discover RESILIENCE, an extraordinary public sculpture created by artist Alex Mickle in collaboration with the local community.

Built from steel, chains and local stone, the sculpture reflects Paraburdoo’s mining history, landscape and community spirit. Even sections of the steel were shaped using a blast-forming process developed with local mining crews—an incredible meeting of art, industry and innovation.

The surrounding panels share stories about the sculpture’s creation, local people, cultural connections and the history of the region.

We also popped into the IGA to place a Pilbara Art Collective poster on the community noticeboard and left postcards at the newsagency. It may have been a brief visit, but Paraburdoo has certainly earned its place on our Pilbara Art Map.

Pilbara Road Trip: Onslow

What a charming little town Onslow is—peaceful, welcoming and thoughtfully planned, with history, public art and community stories woven throughout its streets and foreshore.

There is so much to discover here. Onslow has a fascinating history shaped by pearling, pastoral life, cyclones and its role during the Second World War. The town’s memorials, museums and heritage sites offer a glimpse into the people, industries and events that helped shape the community.

We loved exploring Onslow’s public art and heritage trail, from the striking painted water tanks to the wonderful Paparazzi Dogs sculpture overlooking the water at Front Beach. These quirky canine photographers are full of personality and have become such a memorable part of the foreshore.

The museum was another highlight—a treasure trove filled with historical objects, machinery, photographs and local stories. The old locomotive and displays offer a fascinating insight into Onslow’s past and the industries that supported the town.

We also visited the Onslow Community Garden, a lovely local space bringing people together through gardening, nature and community connection. Seeing flowers growing in the Pilbara landscape was beautiful and another example of the care and pride found throughout the town.

Onslow’s coastline and surrounding landscape are equally striking. The calm water, red earth, termite mounds, expansive skies, painted tanks and vast salt operations create an extraordinary contrast between nature, industry, history and creativity.

A very special thank you to Michelle at the Onslow Visitor Centre, who warmly welcomed us and kindly accepted Pilbara Art Collective postcards and a poster to display ahead of our website launch on 1 September.

Support like this from local visitor centres is helping us connect travellers and communities with Pilbara artists, makers, cultural places and creative stories from across the region.

Onslow may be small, but it has a big story and plenty of personality. A wonderful stop on our journey through the creative Pilbara.

Pilbara Art Road Trip — the journey begins

Before leaving Karratha for our Pilbara Art Road Trip, I wanted to give my friend visiting from Perth a small introduction to the landscapes, stories and character of this remarkable region.

We began at the historic town of Cossack, walking among its beautiful old stone buildings and taking in a place shaped by many layers of history. From there, we visited Settlers Beach before continuing to Honeymoon Cove at Point Samson.

The coastline around Point Samson is full of extraordinary rock formations, colours and textures. Up close, the stone feels almost like a natural artwork — layered, folded and marked by time, with deep reds, soft pinks, charcoal tones and traces of green.

It felt like the perfect beginning to our journey: slowing down, looking more closely and noticing how strongly this place continues to inspire creativity.

Over the coming days, we’ll be travelling through more Pilbara communities, meeting local people and discovering the artists, stories and landscapes that make this region so special.

The Pilbara Art Road Trip has officially begun.

People often ask me why I started Pilbara Art Collective.

The truth is, this idea has been sitting quietly in the background for almost three years.

Living in the Pilbara, I’ve been constantly inspired by the creativity that exists across the region. From painters, ceramicists and photographers to jewellers, textile artists, galleries and art centres, there is an incredible depth of talent here.

Yet so much of that work can be difficult for people within and beyond the region to discover.

Pilbara Art Collective was born from a simple idea: what if there was a dedicated platform that helped showcase that talent, tell the stories behind it and connect artists with a wider audience? It’s also an opportunity to highlight the important role art and creativity play in the region’s cultural identity and tourism.

As part of bringing this vision to life, I’ll be heading on a road trip around the Pilbara from 11–20 June to connect with artists, visit creative spaces and continue discovering what makes this region so special. I’m also delighted that my immensely creative friend Francine will be joining me on the journey. Together, we’ll be exploring, meeting makers, collecting information for the Pilbara Art Trail and Art Map, and gathering inspiration to share through Pilbara Art Collective.

On another note, working on this project has been incredibly rewarding for my own wellbeing. Art has a unique way of nourishing the soul, and I’ve long been a strong believer in the positive impact of creativity, art therapy and artistic expression on mental health and wellbeing.

Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing more of the journey, introducing some of the people helping bring this idea to life and giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what’s being built.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the idea so far. It means more than you know.

✨ More to come soon.
