Remembering gay activist and builder Gordon Doak (22-8-1931 -12-4-2015), who died in 2015.

Gordon Doak was a well-known figure in the formative years of the gay liberation movement in Melbourne. He came out in a spectacular way in 1973, jogging with a banner from the Western Suburbs to the Gay Pride Week demonstration in the city; the banner read: 'I am proud of my homosexuality. Please change the repress[ive laws] against homosexuals and let us live in peace'. For more on Gordon read Gary Jaynes' obituary: https://bit.ly/2G6uZp1.

In our research for our show 'other:queer stories past and present' we came across this newspaper clipping from the Sunshine Advocate in 1980. The paper writes "In an effort to give two sides to the "gay controversy", The Advocate this week publishes the young girl's story, along with a reader's letter condemning the fostering of homosexual activity through publicity and public acceptance."

The more things change, the more they stay the same...

Watch this space for the story of a Sunshine "Gay" girl.
