Spiky, squishy, or smooth? There’s real science behind why your child prefers certain sensory textures! 🔬

Welcome to Part 3 of our series! Today we’re looking at Point 3: Tactile & Proprioceptive Feedback (Sensory Input).

Our nervous system starts developing before birth, responding to movement, sound, and touch.

Throughout life, sensory input shapes how we regulate our bodies.
Just like a muscle, we can train our nervous system to self-regulate through specific sensory inputs:

💆Proprioceptive Input (Deep Pressure):
Squeezing, pulling, stretching, or popping activates our muscles and joints. This provides deep pressure input—much like a firm hug—grounding the body and bringing the nervous system back to a calm state.

✋ Tactile Input (Touch):
- Smooth worry stones or soft textures provide soothing touch sensations that calm an overloaded brain.
- Spiky or high-textured items offer a quick, stimulating “wake-up” call to bring body awareness back to the present moment.

✨ The Takeaway:
One of the best ways to build self-regulation skills is through sensory play—discovering what inputs feel good and what don’t.

Next time you see a fidget toy, remember: it’s not a “distraction item”—it’s a regulation supertool! 🦸‍♀️

Ever wonder why some people click a pen or tap their foot while working super hard? 🖋️

Welcome to Part 2 of our sensory regulation series! Today we’re diving into Point 2: Distracting the Overpowered Brain.

Did you know that a single task—like listening or reading—rarely uses 100% of our brain’s attentional capacity?
So what happens to that extra brain power? 💡

We call it ‘floating attention.’ It operates in the background to keep us aware of our surroundings. But in everyday situations, this floating attention can easily get hijacked by external distractions, overthinking, or daydreaming!

🧠 How fidgeting saves the day:
Fidgeting—especially with repetitive movements—gives that extra bit of attention a harmless task to focus on without taking away from the main activity.

By keeping that floating attention occupied with a fidget tool, the rest of the mind can stay 100% engaged on the task at hand!

💭What’s your go-to fidget when you’re trying to focus? Pen clicking, hair twirling, or a dedicated fidget tool?

Why does fidgeting actually help us concentrate? 🤔

Ever wondered why an Occupational Therapist (OT) recommends fidget tools, or why kids naturally reach for squishy or spiky toys?

Fidgeting isn’t a distraction—it’s a self-regulation tool that tunes the brain for optimal learning and focus!

Let’s break down Point 1: The ‘Green Zone’ (aka The Goldilocks Zone).

Our brain functions best when we’re not running too fast (overwhelmed) and not running too slow (bored)... we want to be just right.

🐌 When running ‘too slow’:
Ever caught your mind wandering in a long meeting, or watched a child struggle to sit still in class? The brain needs micro-movements to wake up! Fidgets like clickers, spinners, and quick-rebound squeezes give the instant feedback the brain needs to boost alertness.

🐆When running ‘too fast’:
When sensory overload hits and everything feels out of control, repetitive movement provides grounding stability. Tools like liquid timers, slow-rebound squeeze toys, and spiky textures help filter out noise and calm the nervous system.

Does your child run ‘too fast’ or ‘too slow’ when trying to focus? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Stay tuned for Part 2, where we talk about the “Overpowered Brain”!
