A few people have asked lately why ASC hasn’t been attending as many conventions and collector fairs over the last couple of years, so here’s the honest answer.
The reality is we’ve had ongoing issues securing reliable stock allocations from Hasbro. At times we’ve struggled just to fulfil existing customer preorders in full, let alone have enough fresh stock to build proper convention displays or bring the latest waves and exclusives to events.
As most collectors know, a convention table is not just about putting out old inventory and hoping for the best. To justify the costs involved — travel, accommodation, freight, staffing, insurance, booth fees and setup — you need a healthy mix of both legacy product and the latest current releases. Without access to consistent new stock allocations, the financial reality simply doesn’t stack up anymore.
That’s the frustrating part. ASC is a long-standing legacy Star Wars retailer and the only full Australian Toy Association member in this space operating online, yet we are finding ourselves in a position where allocation shortages and stock shorting are now affecting day-to-day business operations.
To be completely transparent, if these supply issues continue, we are now looking at reducing store hours and staffing levels because you simply cannot operate sustainably when you cannot obtain enough product to sell. That is a pretty sad position for a legitimate independent retailer to be in after years supporting the hobby and collector community.
The irony is collectors are constantly told to “support local,” yet local specialist retailers are increasingly being starved of stock while larger channels and overseas supply paths continue to dominate access.
If this trend keeps going, the future of collecting in Australia may genuinely become little more than Facebook group sellers, marketplace flippers, and overseas imports. That’s not good for collectors, it’s not good for the hobby, and it’s certainly not good for long-term retail stability in this country.
We’re still here. We’re still fighting. But people deserve to understand why things have changed.
