Oculus Guitars — 5879 Head
Introducing our developing and new amplifier platform built around the unmistakable character of the 5879 pentode — a front-end tube chosen for its harmonic complexity, fast touch response, glassy edge, and rich texture under gain.
The 5879 Head is our flagship amplifier designed with a boutique EL34 power section in a more modern platform: articulate, aggressive, and authoritative, but still full of life and classic voices that will be familiar. The voicing direction draws inspiration from the tightness, punch, and modern gain discipline associated with world class builders like Friedman and Mike Fortin, while also taking cues from the chime, harmonic richness, and tube-forward design philosophy associated with the great Mike Zaite / Dr. Z.
At the core is a 5879 pentode preamp feeding a fixed-bias EL34 push-pull output section, with oversized “big iron” transformers chosen for strong low-end control, dimensional harmonic response, and a firmer, more commanding feel. This transformer philosophy is central to the amp: more headroom, better bass authority, stronger transient response, and the kind of composure that lets the amp stay powerful without becoming stiff or sterile.
The goal is a voice that feels large, immediate, and harmonically alive — tight where it needs to be, but never flat. The low end stays controlled under gain, the mids remain vocal and muscular, and the top end carries chime, cut, and harmonic sparkle without becoming brittle.
The 5879's signature is voiced around two distinct gain eras:
ERA 1 mode is the open, articulate modded boutique marshall-esque rock voice — rich upper harmonics, vocal midrange, vintage-inspired bite, and enough bloom to keep chords dimensional. This side gravitates away from the more familiar 12ax7 triode preamp most common in an EL34 driven amplifier, and leans right into the 5879’s natural pentode chime and harmonic movement, with a more organic response and massive amounts of articulation in the midrange under the fingers.
ERA 2 mode pushes the platform further into a tighter and more aggressive modern voice — more saturation, firmer low-end tracking, faster attack, and a more percussive response and surgical "thump" for heavier rhythm playing and modern genres. The goal is a modern, high-authority gain structure with clarity: dense and aggressive, but not smeared, fizzy, or over-compressed.
The control set is designed around a full Bass / Mid / Treble classic (TMB) EQ, added Presence, Depth, and Post Phase Inversion Master Volume (PPIMV), and our signature front-panel "Era switching", with a rear-panel 3-way NFB control for Lo / Mid / Hi feedback response and distinct 3 in 1 amp voicing. That NFB switch alone is intended to shift the entire feel of the power section and allows tonal shaping between: looser and more open, more balanced and classic, or tighter, percussive low end and more controlled surgical response depending on the player, the speaker, the cab, and wether you want modern or vintage feel while factoring in stage volume.
A buffered effects loop is also part of the design direction, keeping the amp practical for modern pedalboards, delay, modulation, and time-based effects without compromising the core tube voice.
Visually, the 5879 Head is being designed as a boutique statement piece: each unit is handbuilt with real handcrafted premium hardwood head cabinet options, custom brushed aluminium control panels, custom chassis, custom Oculus badging, a range of custom grille variations, and a subtle internal LED glow from within the cabinet.
We also had to opt for custom and purpose built Output and Power transformers to facilitate this unique combination of tubes and to achieve the overall voicing "architecture" we desired.
The flagship Oculus Guitars 5879 Head is currently sound and electrically designed, it is currently being scaled and prepared for manufacturing and is well and truly in development with a launch set for late 2026 or early-mid 2027.
