Little Teapots

Little Teapots A little something for everyone, made from fabric with love. Little Teapots is a craft group comprised of three generations of women.

We started because we talked Mum into selling some of her quilts that she has made. The main reason to sell them was so that she can buy more fabrics to make more quilts.

This is definitely different to the tradition quilting. I kind of love it. What about you.

Did You Know?

Paper tole, also known as 3D decoupage, is a paper craft technique that involves layering cutouts of the same image on top of one another to create a three-dimensional effect. This technique has been used for centuries to create decorative art pieces, religious icons, and even military memorabilia.

In paper tole, the artist begins by selecting an image and then creating multiple copies of it. Each copy is then cut out and layered on top of the other, often using foam or adhesive dots to create depth and dimension. The layers are typically built up from the bottom of the image, with each layer getting progressively smaller than the previous layer.

One of the unique features of paper tole is the way in which it allows artists to create the illusion of depth and texture using nothing more than paper. By layering the cutouts in a particular way, they can create shadows, highlights, and even the appearance of different materials such as fabric or metal.

Paper tole is a versatile technique that can be used to create a wide range of art pieces, from simple cards and bookmarks to elaborate wall hangings and sculptures. It is a popular craft among hobbyists and is also used in professional art and design.

There are some embroidery threads available in the market that give the appearance and texture of fur when brushed. These types of threads are called "furry" or "fluffy" threads, and they are usually made of synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon. The texture of the thread is achieved by adding tiny fibers to the thread during the manufacturing process, which can then be brushed out to create a fur-like effect. This type of thread is often used in embroidery designs that require the appearance of fur, such as animal designs or decorative cushions. When used in embroidery, the thread is stitched onto the fabric, and then the fibers are brushed out with a specialized brush or comb to create the desired effect.
examples of these threads are:
Madeira Burmilana thread, a 12 weight wool/acrylic blend
& BurmilanaCo, a 12 weight cotton/acrylic blend)

Did you Know... Quilting has a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years, with evidence of quilted items found in ancient Egyptian tombs and in the ruins of ancient civilizations in China and India. Quilting as we know it today originated in Europe during the Middle Ages, where it was used as a practical way to repurpose old clothing and scraps of fabric.
In the United States, quilting became a popular pastime in the 18th and 19th centuries, with women gathering together to create intricate and often symbolic quilts that served both practical and decorative purposes. Today, quilting remains a beloved craft and art form, with countless styles and techniques passed down through generations of quilters.

It's been a while since my last post on Little Teapots, and that was before my mother Muriel's cancer diagnosis. Sadly, she passed away on July 22, 2021. Now, as I clean out her sewing room, I'm discovering many things I didn't know about her.

I had no idea how skilled she was at watercolor painting until I came across a pile of her artwork that I'd never seen before. Despite dabbling in a wide range of crafts over the years, such as paper tole, paper making, quilling, card making, copper embossing, pottery, and even constructing models like the Eiffel Tower and a gypsy wagon out of paper using a scan and cut, she always found time to sew. She made dresses for her granddaughters, tracksuits for her grandsons, and taught me and the grandchildren how to sew, even if it was just watching the embroidery machine in action and changing thread colors from time to time.

I miss her dearly, but what I miss most are the times we spent together with my daughter, making items to sell at markets. We started the market stall to make room for all the different techniques and products we wanted to try. For instance, my mother used a special thread to embroider cats on cushions that, when brushed after embroidery, looked and felt like fur.

Sometimes, I watch my favorite quilter on YouTube, hoping to gain the courage to create something myself. My mother made so many beautiful quilts, most of which she gave away as people were not willing to pay the cost of materials. It breaks my heart to see her work and talent go unappreciated.

I'm aiming to revive this page so we can showcase my mother's work. If you know someone who might be interested in purchasing a patchwork quilt, a furry cat cushion, or a gardening apron, please share this page with them.
