🎣 Welcome back to another episode of Tin the Know! Today, we’re heading out on the water to dive deep into the world of long-line fishing together with our fisher: Kyle Lamason!

Ever wondered how your tuna goes from the ocean to the jar? We’re bringing you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look to explain the science and sustainability behind the catch.

Here is what you’ll learn from the captain:

* 🌊 What is long-lining? A single line can stretch for 35 miles and hold up to 1,200 hooks! The crew attaches AIS transponder buoys to monitor the gear's exact location as it drifts in the current.
* 🪝 Why do we use circle hooks? It's all about sustainability. Circle hooks are one of the best tools for reducing bycatch. They are specifically designed to catch the fish in the lip rather than the throat, meaning any non-target species can be safely released alive.

At Little Tuna & East Coast Tuna Co., we believe in knowing exactly where your seafood comes from and the methods used to catch it. Check out the video for the full breakdown! 👇

When you pick up one of our East Coast Tuna Co. tins, you’re supporting more than just a brand: you’re supporting Jason and the Australian fishing families who are dedicated to one of the most sustainable fishing industries in the world. 🇦🇺

Jason is a fierce advocate for keeping Australian fish on Australian shelves, and we couldn't be prouder to have his catch in our tins.

TIN THE KNOW: What happens beneath the surface. 🎣✨

In the world of fishing, the tools we choose define the legacy we leave behind.

When we talk about Long-Lining, we’re talking about a method that treads lightly. By suspending our lines in the open water with depths over 1000 meters, we ensure our gear never disturbs the seafloor. 🏝️

But the real hero of the story is the Circle Hook. Its unique, curved shape is a conscious choice for marine safety. Unlike traditional hooks, it’s designed to hook a fish only in the corner of the mouth. If a non-target species visits our line, this "shallow hook-up" allows us to release them safely and cleanly, with circle hooks the by-catch can be returned to the water healthy and alive. 🪝💙

Choosing the right way to fish today means there will still be fish tomorrow.

Little Tuna and East Coast Tuna Co proudly utilise this method. 🇦🇺💙

But it’s not just about the training. Growing up in Port Lincoln, SA, the ocean is in his blood. Kyle shares his deep passion for sustainability, his love for his family, and why protecting our marine life for the next generation means everything to him. 🌊💙

Plus, we ask the ultimate question: Kyle vs. an Albacore Tuna... who takes gold? 🥇 You’ll have to watch until the end to find out! 👀👇

Petition to add these to every keyboard immediately 📲

If we ran the emoji library, it’d look a little different. Fewer red hearts, more circle hooks 🪝
Fewer cocktails, more eskys. You understand.
