This time last week, I realised that I have been nearly walking past the studio on a semi-regular basis. These few photos (taken on a phone I borrowed while my usual one was awaiting a fix) don’t really show how nice the space is, nor how many special pieces there are to browse/order. I think the coat shown here is the Magician’s coat ... I’d like one of those, please, an Ava shirt in grey chambray, the Enlighten Me pant, and a Peasant skirt in olive. I drifted away inspired, with some treasure that I hope to show you more of down the track.

A beautiful rigid pink (plus purple plus white plus blue plus orange) silk forms the main of this flower. I've been intending to make it into a dolly since first sight . . . one only. 🌻

This is a trimmed selection of images, taken on my living room floor as I looked over a compendium titled ‘Contemporary jewellery in Australia and New Zealand’, assembled and written by Patricia Anderson, published by Craftsman House in 1998. In itself, this book is a treasure. Many of the artists featured remain contemporary (and legendary). In her text, Anderson refers to herself as ‘the writer’ ... such as in the Acknowledgments where she thanks her husband for being the requisite ‘someone around with higher housekeeping standards than the writer’. The first line of her Introduction is: ‘The following considerations have given this book its particular cast’, which exemplifies her beautifully direct and intelligent prose. I feel like quoting half the book to you and conveying 80% of its pages. Instead, my shortlist (photographers named where possible):

My January report has a sun in every frame
It was a strange month of (among other things) watching the weather and watching the tennis, almost hiding inside the tennis - thinking and not thinking about a thrown bomb that didn’t explode, about other bombs and stars and fires and fall-outs and gun shots. When I made a new set of collages on a very hot day, I felt particularly conscious that they had ‘no bearing on the present’ - had that line in mind but also the idea that one way to ‘bear the present’ was to make something lovely that could be slipped into a book or sent from one friend to another. I went with a friend to see the ‘Women Photographers’ show at the NGV (credits below) - it’s quite good although I didn’t enjoy the way it’s organised; we also saw Stone Soup by Hany Armanious at Buxton contemporary - - - that was a bright spot, so wonderful and amusing (no photos as my phone got stashed away with my bag but I highly recommend).
The face underwater is thought to belong to Remedios Varo - the photo was taken by Lola Álvarez Bravo in 1950; ‘Métal’ is the title of a great photobook from 1928 by Germaine Krull; my favourite photograph was the person at the loom, taken in Beijing by Hedda Morrison, probably in the 30s.

A few views of the third one-off cushion finished in my studio earlier this week. I’ve called it ‘night sky’ (amazingly original name) but it sorta befits this morning, from what I can see, quilt of grey cloud with some cracks of light.

A few notes on shipping and pick-ups . . . I’ll continue to send Christmas parcels this Thursday and Friday (as per Aus Post’s assurances), but certainly recommend that you select the express option during check-out. Relief - my three new quilted patchwork cushions are finished! These are my final offering for the year, to be added to my online collection tomorrow. As says, I do have some treasures there to browse. Cushions, mushrooms and flowers in the textiles category, new postcards in the paper shop, some lovely clothing in the Patience section plus a beautiful selection of pieces by Gabbee herself. Please do have a look if you are still looking for gifts or just in the mood … Now its phone down for me as I’m about to go see ‘In the Mood for Love’ at the newish Brunswick Picture House. I am really in the mood for love. Sending ❤️

A few lines . . . . . I was really hoping to finish three new patchwork cushions this week but time has beaten me again. As I was leaving the studio earlier today, I took some very quick pictures of the finished cushion fronts, and I have popped these up online for those of you who are interested to see what’s around the corner. I will get them backed over the next few days. I had in mind to quilt these ones, which I have done . . . still getting used to the result!

Sweet, small things from the past week or so . . . inc a shell vessel by for next to a velvety jade flower from ... Lincraft. (Still going regularly to Lincraft is one of the banes of my existence but I am in love with this flower).
