🎃 Picture this terrifying scene…the sun is setting, the night is pressing in, you hear the sound of a bat flying overhead and a far off wolf howls to the rising moon…you’re exhausted, hangry, stink of spit up and sweat, aching to rest…and then…your newborn baby starts crying….and doesn’t stop…for hours *insert scream sounds here* 😱👻
This probably sounds familiar (hopefully not the dramatic wolf stuff 😂) for a lot of new parents and you might have heard this part of the day referred to as the Witching Hours 🧙♀️
Lots of parents wonder if there might be something wrong with their baby - are they in pain? Are they hungry? Are they not getting enough milk? Do they have an intolerance? Are they sick? And so on…
The good news is that this phase is actually a completely normal part of every newborns development. This has been studied and scientists have found that all breastfeeding mammals go through a similar stage of development as human babies!
It begins at around 2 weeks old, peaks at around 6-8 weeks and then usually is gone by 3-4 months old. This phase is characterised by crying for hours, often in the evening hours and your baby may seem to resist soothing. Some babies can cry more or less than others, and they are still normal.
It’s also sometimes referred to as the period it of PURPLE crying - not because this is the colour a baby goes but because it stands for:
P - peak of crying - crying more each week, the most in month 2 and less in months 3-5
U - unexpected - crying can come and go and you don’t know why
R - resists soothing - your baby may not stop crying no matter what you try
P - pain-like face - a baby may appear like they are in pain even when they are not
L - long lasting - crying can last as much as 5 hours a day or more
E - evening - your baby may cry more in the late afternoon and evening
So now you know it’s normal, how do you live through it? Tune in tomorrow for some tips on how to cope with this tricky stage.
Have you ever heard of the ‘witching hours’? We would love to hear from you.
