Dear kiddos

This is the aftermath of baking cookies with you. It was chaos and fun. There was mess, oh so much mess.

I saw you sneak tastes of the dough, giggling to yourselves with side eyes to each other thinking that you both had me hoodwinked.

Watching you not care that the angel lost their head or your tree broke in half being awkwardly thrown onto the baking tray. Thinking everything was hilarious.

The proud moment when your cookies came out of the oven. And the passionate negotiations for how you must now be allowed to eat these for breakfast.

These are the memories I hope you keep. This is what I will remember. This is what I hope is part of your Christmas memories.

Love mum

Mastitis: What is it?

It’s the result of a blocked milk duct and the milk builds up behind the duct causing inflammation of the breast tissue. This may develop into an infection.

If you get mastitis you may feel a painful lump, your breasts may have shiny red skin and you may feel as if you are getting the flu - to get the shivers and the aches.

You may also get a blocked duct out of the blue and may not get any early signs (as happened with Lucy).

What do you do?

🤱 Keep feeding! Now is not the time to stop breastfeeding - it’s safe for your baby to continue to feed and very important to drain the breasts and get the milk moving. Your baby is the best person to help and the best treatment.

🤱 Go to the Dr - contact your GP or your OB/midwife, don’t wait as mastitis can get worse very quickly. If you feel very unwell don’t hesitate go to emergency and get treatment started ASAP.

🤱 if you are having problems with the latch/attachment get some help with feeding at your local child health or with a lactation consultant as draining the breast effectively is very important. If you are having a lot of issues with latching then you could try hand expressing or expressing with a pump to help drain them well.

🤱 start each feed on the affected breast

🤱 wear a wire free bra and loose clothing. If your bra / singlet is leaving any marks on your skin it’s too tight

🤱 change feeding positions to help clear the blockage

🤱 gently massage the breast stroking towards the ni**le while your baby feeds

🤱 apply cold to the breast after feeds and warmth while feeding to encourage the let down

🤱 REST and look after yourself - ask for help

🤱 call ABA Breastfeeding Helpline on 1800 686 268 or 13 Health and ask for the child health nurse

Following on from last nights post about the witching hours - here’s some tips to manage:

⭐️ It’s always good to get your baby checked out by a child health nurse or doctor to rule out any medical issues and give you piece of mind during this tricky time

⭐️ If you know your baby’s pattern - prep before hand - make sure you’re showered and in your comfy clothes, have eaten a meal and are ready to ‘clock on’ when the crying hits, cook dinner in the morning hours

⭐️ If you have older children consider changing around bath time to be at a similar time (a bit earlier) and do an early dinner, offer them a snack before bed if there is a gap between early dinner and bedtime

⭐️ Baby wearing can be great during this phase

⭐️ Swaddling your baby after feeding can help to calm them - a note here - love to dream swaddles are very popular but for some babies they like the contained feeling of a traditional wrap swaddle - you might want to experiment to see what your baby likes

⭐️ You will have to try out different settling techniques to find what works for you and your baby - do they like to be rocked, or do they like to be patted? Try something and if it’s not working, try something else

⭐️ If your baby likes to suck to soothe you can try a dummy but please note this isn’t advised until breastfeeding is established - however you know your baby best so trust your instincts

⭐️ Ask for help from family and friends

⭐️ Have a nap in the morning when baby might be more settled

⭐️ Take nice deep breaths and remind yourself that you are doing your best, and everything is ok, and that this too shall pass

⭐️ If you are struggling at any point with the crying and becoming frustrated, pop your baby down in a safe place and walk away for a quick breather or ask someone else to step in

⭐️ Tell your family and friends if you’re having a tough time, reach out for further supports if you need them

🎃 Picture this terrifying scene…the sun is setting, the night is pressing in, you hear the sound of a bat flying overhead and a far off wolf howls to the rising moon…you’re exhausted, hangry, stink of spit up and sweat, aching to rest…and then…your newborn baby starts crying….and doesn’t stop…for hours *insert scream sounds here* 😱👻

This probably sounds familiar (hopefully not the dramatic wolf stuff 😂) for a lot of new parents and you might have heard this part of the day referred to as the Witching Hours 🧙‍♀️

Lots of parents wonder if there might be something wrong with their baby - are they in pain? Are they hungry? Are they not getting enough milk? Do they have an intolerance? Are they sick? And so on…

The good news is that this phase is actually a completely normal part of every newborns development. This has been studied and scientists have found that all breastfeeding mammals go through a similar stage of development as human babies!

It begins at around 2 weeks old, peaks at around 6-8 weeks and then usually is gone by 3-4 months old. This phase is characterised by crying for hours, often in the evening hours and your baby may seem to resist soothing. Some babies can cry more or less than others, and they are still normal.

It’s also sometimes referred to as the period it of PURPLE crying - not because this is the colour a baby goes but because it stands for:

P - peak of crying - crying more each week, the most in month 2 and less in months 3-5

U - unexpected - crying can come and go and you don’t know why

R - resists soothing - your baby may not stop crying no matter what you try

P - pain-like face - a baby may appear like they are in pain even when they are not

L - long lasting - crying can last as much as 5 hours a day or more

E - evening - your baby may cry more in the late afternoon and evening

So now you know it’s normal, how do you live through it? Tune in tomorrow for some tips on how to cope with this tricky stage.

Have you ever heard of the ‘witching hours’? We would love to hear from you.

Happy Halloween everyone 🎃
