An inspection of Aaron's OS B2104, this has been run in and done a couple of weekend long events, the last was RCGP in Adelaide in February.
Interesting to note, this is the first model to have the updated backplate and it seems corrosion could be an issue on these if correct steps are not religiously undertaken every time the engine is not run for a while.
We always run the car out of fuel and do OS after run oil.
These might benefit from being stored backplate down, to ensure oil sits on the backplate.
A quick wipe with a paper towel and the gunk is removed, but minute pitting is visible.
Note the golden colour on head button, this is a good sign.
Highly polished liner evenly polished all around to the top of the stroke. This engine is now in its prime.

I started running in a new OS B21 Ongaro edition for the Philippines 🇵🇭
It's had roughly 3 litres of Nitro-X HP173 30% through it now.
One whole practice day with approximately 10 preheated starts.
Then qualifying day on Saturday where it only had 7 mins runtime so I failed to finish most of my qualifiers.
Then finals day where I ran a 20 min semi and a 45 minute final.
A quick inspection today confirms all is well.
It still has a small amount of pinch, so I'll have to continue preheating it.

A friend asked me how to break in his new nitro engine?
I am a big fan of JQ, and his breakin video is the best I've seen.
The importance of temperature being above 100 is key, every time you start the engine. Keep heating it until the mechanical pinch at cold is minimal.
Some of the newer OS engines need to be richened from factory when started, to keep the temperature under control.
Use whatever you need to keep the heat in engine, either stubby cooler plus heat gun or engine heater. It needs to be between 100-115

My latest customer, an OS B2101 in for an inspection. It was originally EBIS and has run about 25 litres.
The owner has kept it in pretty good condition, although the rear bearing was getting a little rusty. Luckily no damage to bearing races or ceramic balls.
Everything was cleaned up, oiled and reassembled ready for the next race day.
A few of the pics show what details go into a report.

No, it's not short. Yes, it is good.
Don't expect to pick it up first time, this takes practice, concentration and patience.
have fun!

The Ultimate range of M3X/MXS engines is based on the popular OS B2101. Unfortunately, they went cheap and didn't put the DLC (Diamond Like Coating) crank in it. So corrosion can be a big problem unless you're very careful.
Lucklily, the B2101 crank is a direct replacement.
Rule #1 with Nitro engines, never throw anything away that might be useful in the future!

Bought a brand new motor? About to run it for the first time?
Make sure you open up the backplate and check it out for any rare contamination, corrosion or other issues.
The run in process is very important and you want to start off 100% clean.
