Landmark Map In the Search For El Dorado; the earliest map to report the Discoveries of Sir Walter Raleigh's Voyages to South America
The search for El Dorado, the mythical city of Gold in South America, needs no introduction. The present map is the earliest obtainable map based upon the information drawn from source information provided by English sources familiar with the manuscript maps and accounts brought back to America by Walter Raleigh, Lawrence Keymis and William Downe. The map appeared in Theodore De Bry’s Americae pars VIII, accounting the English Voyages in America led by Sir Francis Drake, Thomas Cavendish and Sir Walter Raleigh.

Extremely early and important accounts on Oman and the Gulf, illustrated with a fascinating map of the region and a genealogical table locating the Tribes; published as part of the Transactions of the Bombay Geographical Society; the copy of the author.
First edition of these accounts of the Oman and the Gulf, by Ross and Miles, wonderfully illustrated with maps and charts, including a large map of the Arabian Coast from Abu Dhabi (“Abu Thebi”) and Dubai (“Debay”) to Ra’s Jibsh, published as part of volume 19 of the Transactions, doubtless one of one of the most significant publications of India of the time, which is composed of first-hand news of the member’s explorations, journeys, and scientific researches in Asia, the Middle East, and India, most being here published for the first time. // 1874

Prince of Anhalt’s copy of Gesner’s encyclopedic work on birds, in a contemporary dated binding
1557 // Fine copy of the first edition in German of Gesner’s thoroughly illustrated encyclopedic work on birds, one of the first to use original drawings of birds, with a fine royal provenance and in a dated contemporary binding; it remained a standard reference during the 16thand 17thcenturies. Of his work PMM 77 states “An encyclopaedia of contemporary knowledge, intended to replace not only medieval compilations but even Aristotle’s work… It was many times reprinted and although it often suffered at the hands of editors, it remained the standard reference book even as late as Linné and beyond, because neither Linné nor Ray included illustrations”. Considered one of the fathers of zoology and called the ‘German Pliny’, Gesner set out to rationalize the animal kingdom in the way that his contemporaries Brunfels, Bock, and Fuchs had done for botany.
