I’m sad and angry this morning. Every rainy season in this country brings the same images: flooded roads, submerged homes, blocked drainage channels, properties and homes lost, and frustrated citizens asking the same question: Why does this keep happening?
We really can do better. Better design of our cities. Better enforcement of laws. Better maintenance of our homes and environment. Better responsibility from all of us.
In the meantime, please…
1. Avoid flooded roads: Do not drive or walk through flooded areas. Just a small amount of moving water can sweep away a vehicle or knock someone off their feet. If you encounter water covering a road, turn around and find an alternative route.
2. Move to higher ground quickly: Flash floods rise very fast. If water levels start increasing, immediately move to higher ground and avoid valleys, drainage channels, and underpasses.
3 . Protect yourself from electrical risks: If water begins entering your home, switch off electricity at the main power source. Avoid touching electrical equipment while standing in water.
4. Prepare a simple emergency kit: Keep a small waterproof bag with essentials such as drinking water, medication, a flashlight, a power bank, copies of key documents, and some nonperishable food.
5. Check on others: Neighbours, elderly people, children, and people with disabilities may need assistance during emergencies. A quick check-in can make a significant difference.
