Louis XI is probable the most important French king you never heard of. Coming to the throne in 1461 near the end of the Hundred Years' War, Louis, aka "the Universal Spider," took control of a France that was devastated by war, threatened by England, and plagued by nobles who barely acknowledged the sovereignty of the king. In fact, the Duchy of Burgundy was almost an autonomous state and posed a constant threat to the existence of France. However, by the death of Louis in 1483, France was at peace with England, royal power had been strengthened, and Burgundy had been brought fully into French control. Read more about this fascinating king in Paul Murray Kendall's biography, "Louis XI." It is an older book, so the style is a bit awkward, but it is an interesting book about a fascinating king.
