SEASONAL STORAGE TIPS

SHORT-TERM MACHINE STORAGE

• Keep the machine and supply of fuel in locked storage and remove the ignition key to prevent children, or others, from playing or tampering with them.
• To avoid sparks from an accidental short circuit, always disconnect the battery's ground cable (negative terminal) first and reconnect it last.
• Do not store the machine with fuel in the tank inside a building where fumes may ignite. Turn the fuel shut-off valve to the "closed" position (if equipped). Drain all fuel from tank and carburetor (if equipped). Allow the engine to cool before storing.
• To avoid the danger of exhaust fume poisoning, do not operate the engine in a closed building without adequate ventilation.
• To reduce fire hazards, clean the machine thoroughly before storage. Dry grass and leaves around the engine and mufflers may ignite.

LONG-TERM MACHINE STORAGE

If you intend to store your machine for an extended period of time, follow the procedures outlined below. These procedures will ensure the machine is ready to operate with minimum preparation when it is removed from storage.

• Check for loose bolts and nuts and tighten, if necessary.
• Apply grease to machine areas where bare metal will rust. Also, apply grease to pivot areas.
• Inflate the tires to a pressure a little higher than usual.
• Change the engine oil and run the engine for about five minutes to circulate oil throughout the engine block and internal moving parts.
• With all implements lowered to the ground, coat any exposed hydraulic cylinder piston rods with grease.
• Remove the battery from the machine. Store the battery following the battery storage procedures.
• Keep the machine in a dry place and sheltered from rain. Cover the machine.
• Store the machine indoors in a dry area protected from sunlight and excessive heat. If the machine must be stored outdoors, cover it with a waterproof tarpaulin.
• Jack the machine up and place blocks under the front and rear axles so that all four tires are off the ground. Keep the tires out of direct sunlight and extreme heat.

Important: When washing the machine, be sure to stop the engine and allow sufficient time for the engine to cool before washing.
Cover the machine after the muffler and engine have cooled down.

REMOVING THE MACHINE FROM STORAGE

• Check the tire air pressure and inflate the tires if they are low.
• Jack the machine up and remove the support blocks.
• Install the battery. Before installing the battery, make sure it is fully charged.
• Check the fan belt tension.
• Check all fluid levels (engine oil, transmission/hydraulic oil, engine coolant and any attached implements).
• Start the engine. Observe all gauges. If all gauges are functioning properly and reading normal, move the machine outside.
• Once outside, park the machine and let the engine idle for at least five minutes.
• Shut the engine off and walk around machine and make a visual inspection looking for evidence of oil or water leaks.
• With the engine fully warmed up, release the parking brake and test the brakes for proper adjustment as you move forward. Adjust the brakes as necessary.

CAUTION! To avoid personal injury: Do not clean the machine with engine running. To avoid the danger of exhaust fume poisoning, do not operate the engine in a closed building without proper ventilation. When storing, remove the key from the key switch to avoid unauthorized persons from operating the machine and getting injured.

WHY THE MINI-EXCAVATOR, MAY BE THE MOST UNDERRATED PIECE OF EQUIPMENT…
In the world of Construction equipment, there are options abound. The ever-growing depth chart, never ceases to amaze! Though these modern innovations have eased the lives of so many, it can at times, become overwhelming trying to choose the right piece of equipment for your business, job, or home project. This is especially true for those who rent their equipment, as they must make the choice time and again. In an effort to help simplify the process as a whole, our Rental Division at Ellis Equipment, has broken down each unit’s fit and functionality. After a tremendous amount of categorizing by industry and use, there were obvious results…but the sleeper no one saw coming? You guessed it! The Kubota Mini-Excavator Series! What a versatile machine!
I’ll start by saying, the sheer diversity of models is what makes the Mini-X (colloquially), so versatile across multiple platforms. Kubota offers a full line of excavators ranging in sizes from the K008 10hp machine, up to the KX080…coming in at whopping 66hp. In addition to the extensive line of K models, Kubota also offers the U series, featuring the always helpful ‘Zero Tail Swing’. The obvious appeal of tight or zero tail swing, is the ability to work in narrow areas. For the residential plumber or underground utility company, working between tightly stacked houses is often the theme of the day. There’s an adherent comfort knowing that, if the tracks can go…so can the house! In addition, one of our favorite features is the retractable tracks! When there may be existing trenches or other obstacles, being able to draw those tracks in and make the pass, can save a ton of man hours!
Attachments Attachments Attachments!!! Obviously, the standard buckets (8”- 60”) are the primary focus. The ability to dig holes, trenches, or face in a fraction of the time is invaluable. Add to that, a mechanical or hydraulic thumb…and you’ve got a long reaching grapple! We are seeing more and more, contractors finding new uses for the thumbs. The ability to grab high or low in a hole for heavy material, could be the solution to a problem, you didn’t know you had! Again…we’re thinking man hours! Can we talk about the hydraulic breakers!? We’re looking at you plumbers! Busted line under that sidewalk? You know what to do! Lastly, a variety of auger bits, ranging from 6” to 36”! I don’t think we need to list the dozens of ways these can be useful, but we would like to address the two largest fields…Fencing and Arborists! For our friends in the fence building world… the ability to use a breaker attachment for old posts and braces, transition to an auger for new post holes, and a bucket and thumb for new posts...what else could you need? Tree guys!!! You’re fairly new to the world of mini-x, welcome! We are seeing an industry swing, to arborists utilizing the mini-x in everyday work. The ability to use thumb and bucket for limb lowering and the augers for new tree planting, is rapidly growing. Further, there are aftermarket companies offering a plethora of saw attachments, often saving time and risk for climbers!
Lastly…and certainly not least, COST! In many situations, we see customers purchasing a track loader that they don’t necessarily need, when they could save quite a bit on a mini-x that would serve all of their needs. The costs vary depending on size, cab, and model…but more often than not, you’ll come in under the cost of some of the less job specific equipment. Rental costs are the big stand outs!!! The mini-x line rents for as low as $220 per day. More often than not, that cost is less than what you can pay in hourly labor, and will drop your job time significantly. This allows for you to move quicker to the next job and ultimately more jobs per week, month, etc., all going to YOUR BOTTOM LINE!
So, the next time you’re thinking about bidding a job or starting a home project, consider the Kubota line of Mini Excavators…and give us a call at Ellis Equipment for all of your Rental and Equipment needs!

I want to give a shout out to Ellis Equipment for donating MUCH NEEDED equipment to Shreveport Volunteer Network. You couldn't have helped a more deserving group. I hope you and your customers as well as vendors will open your hearts and help our neighbors both in Texas and LA who've suffered and will continue to suffer after Hurricane Laura. If you can volunteer, PLEASE PLEASE do so. It takes a village.. and I want Ellis Equipment to know how much it is appreciated you stepped up.
