Happy New Year! At the start of each month of 2022, we’ll be featuring exceptional calendars from our diverse collection and the corresponding month’s image.
January is a perfect time to admire the calming art of Wolf Kahn. In his long, remarkable career, never one to eschew bright pastels in representing woods and skies, Kahn was a maverick in how he filled the canvas. He once said, “I enjoy making something austere and dramatic out of the color pink.” His unique approach of employing spontaneity while creating representational scenes produced a body of work that is as pleasurable as it is deeply moving. Let his art invigorate as well as comfort you in the new year.

Jacob Riis & Lewis Hine -- MWW Great Photographers #17

Lewis Hine (American, 1874–1940)
Steamfitter (1921)
Gelatin silver print, 42.1 x 30.9 cm.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Ford Motor Company Collection)

Hine's classic photo from his "Powerhouse" series (part of a larger series "Men at Work, 1920-1940: Dignity of Labor") captures the merger of man and machine in the industrial era, a union which Charles Chaplin would turn inside out fifteen years later in his film "Modern Times." Hine's series on industry represented a marked shift from the gritty documentary style of his earlier exposés of child labor and other social maladies. This new, more staged approach, which he called “interpretive photography,” was designed to raise the stature of industrial workers, who he saw as being increasingly diminished by the massive machinery they operated. Ironically, Hine’s use of hand-selected and precisely posed models actually helped to cement the pictorial formulas employed by burgeoning corporate public-relations departments.

Utagawa (aka Ando) Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858)
One Hundred Famous Views of Edo #27: Plum Garden, Kamata (2nd month of 1857)
Color woodblock print, 34 x 22.9 cm.
The Brooklyn Museum, New York

View of the extensive Plum Garden in the Kamata area. The estate which was open to the public complete with teahouses and a restaurant dated from the early Bunsei Period (1818-1830) and came to be known as the "Plum Mansion" (Umeyashiki), with its several hundred trees extending into the distance. The owner of the mansion was a medicine dealer from Omori, whose chief product was a cold remedy called Wachusan. The structure on the right is an indigo cushioned palanquin of the simple A-frame type known as a "yamakago" ("mountain palanquin") and was used widely for travel in Japan, suggesting that a traveler had stopped off from nearby Tokaido for a rest, leaving an over garment on top.

🇨🇦 A BOY AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD “18 writers to watch in 2018… set to leave their mark on the literary scene.” – CBC Books. 👑 www.davidkingstonyeh.com "A Boy at the Edge of the World... is a gay S*x and the City meets Girls meets Jean-Marc Vallée's C.R.A.Z.Y. It is a delightful and comedic romp as small-town Daniel navigates the big city and his own deliciously tangled relationships." -Guernica Editions *** Meet Daniel Garneau, your average gay hockey player from small-town Ontario. After moving to Toronto to attend university, Daniel meets David, a bike mechanic whose Catholic Italian mother talks to her dead husbands. Their chemistry is immediate, but Daniel is still drawn to his ex-boyfriend Marcus, a performance artist whose grandfather was a book-burning N**i. Through a series of misadventures both comic and tragic, Daniel navigates the pitfalls of dating and relationships, while juggling the needs of his eccentric family and newfound friends. A Boy at the Edge of the World is a rollicking dramedy that explores the compulsive and (ultimately) universal human pursuit of intimacy, s*x, and love. * * * 🍁FEATURE by the CBC:http://www.cbc.ca/books/a-boy-at-the-edge-of-the-world-1.4692842 🍁INTERVIEW by Open Book: http://open-book.ca/News/A-Great-Book-is-Frighteningly-Truthful-David-Kingston-Yeh-on-Writing-Gay-Love-S*x-Realism-Social-Media 🍁 BOOK REVIEW by Drew Rowsome: https://drewrowsome.blogspot.ca/2018/05/a-boy-at-edge-of-world-and-integrating.html
LA TEMPORADA DE LAS LIGEREZAS New noir fiction of Alejandro Marin On this occasion it is the murder of an important Italian-Argentine industrialist which summons Jordi Gonorria, economist and almost professional of the kitchen, and the commissioner Quito Verdudo. The fiction takes place in Punta del Este, surely the point for the leisure with more international character of South America. It develops in that frivolous environment that clothes the vulgarity of its summer time, disguised by the strokes of refinement that give a certain distinction to the place. With all the characters that populate each season. Including the "celebrities", the arrivistes and the scoundrels. And the display of power and unconcern that allows abundance. Atmosphere that invites you to be carried away by the always welcome worldly pleasures, abandoning s*xual praxis and prudish ways. An entertaining narration, which also leads us to know cooking stories, economic enigmas, and colorful and unplanned earthly entanglements of distinguished intellectuals.
