Jacob Riis & Lewis Hine -- MWW Great Photographers #17

Lewis Hine (American, 1874–1940)
Steamfitter (1921)
Gelatin silver print, 42.1 x 30.9 cm.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Ford Motor Company Collection)

Hine's classic photo from his "Powerhouse" series (part of a larger series "Men at Work, 1920-1940: Dignity of Labor") captures the merger of man and machine in the industrial era, a union which Charles Chaplin would turn inside out fifteen years later in his film "Modern Times." Hine's series on industry represented a marked shift from the gritty documentary style of his earlier exposés of child labor and other social maladies. This new, more staged approach, which he called “interpretive photography,” was designed to raise the stature of industrial workers, who he saw as being increasingly diminished by the massive machinery they operated. Ironically, Hine’s use of hand-selected and precisely posed models actually helped to cement the pictorial formulas employed by burgeoning corporate public-relations departments.

One Hundred Famous Views of Edo #27: Plum Garden, Kamata (2nd month of 1857)
Color woodblock print, 34 x 22.9 cm.
The Brooklyn Museum, New York

View of the extensive Plum Garden in the Kamata area. The estate which was open to the public complete with teahouses and a restaurant dated from the early Bunsei Period (1818-1830) and came to be known as the "Plum Mansion" (Umeyashiki), with its several hundred trees extending into the distance. The owner of the mansion was a medicine dealer from Omori, whose chief product was a cold remedy called Wachusan. The structure on the right is an indigo cushioned palanquin of the simple A-frame type known as a "yamakago" ("mountain palanquin") and was used widely for travel in Japan, suggesting that a traveler had stopped off from nearby Tokaido for a rest, leaving an over garment on top.

MWW Artwork of the Day (6/25/21)
Joseph Stella (Italian/American, 1877-1946)
Neapolitan Song (1929)
Oil on canvas, 97.5 x 71.7 cm.
Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC (Gift of Françoise & Harvey Rambach)

The Italian immigrant Giuseppe Stella is justly acclaimed for his Brooklyn Bridge pictures, modernist masterpieces in the Precisionist style. Less known (and hence appreciated) are the marvelous "theme pictures" featuring improbably exotic plants he did in 1920s and 1930s.

Stella believed that every day should "begin and end [with] the painting of a flower." The exotic plants he sketched in the Bronx Botanical Garden resurface in this imaginary scene of the Bay of Naples, drawn with the precision and love of nature that Stella absorbed from Italy's Renaissance painters. The tips of the palmetto leaf radiate across the picture plane like a visible, unfolding wave of sound. Stella had moments of homesickness, when images of his homeland came to him as clearly as when he first arrived in America in 1896. Here, it is as if the Neapolitan song is reaching across the sea, bridging the distance between Stella's old home and his adopted country.

MWW Artwork of the Day (6/17/21)
Jacques-Émile Blanche (French, 1861–1942)
Portrait of Marcel Proust at Age 21 (1892)
Oil on canvas, 73.5 x 60.5 cm.
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

Jacques-Emile Blanche, an admired portraitist in the 1880s, portrayed Proust as a young man, aged 21, when he was still only a social chronicler. Blanche was then developing a brilliant, rapid technique; but this portrait is highly restrained and particularly powerful.

The young dandy is presented in a front view, in a hieratic pose (the painting was probably originally a full-length portrait). The contrast between the very dark tones of his suit and the background and the flesh-coloured face and collar, toning with the white orchid in his buttonhole, is particularly striking. The sharp outlines, the fluid paint, and the delicate strokes bring out a sense of inner feelings. Young Proust with his great dark eyes and sensual mouth is already a little more than a dandy: the perfect oval of his face and the pallor of his complexion give him a grave almost Christ like look. That probably explains why this portrait has remained the best-known and most accurate representation of the man who was not yet the author of "Remembrance of Things Past." Proust kept this painting until he died in 1922.

Self-Portrait (1887)

Prior to leaving the Netherlands for Paris in February 1886, Vincent van Gogh had rendered the harsh beauty of peasant life in images such as The Potato Eaters (1885; Amsterdam, Van Gogh Museum), the great work of his early Realist phase. However, sudden exposure to French avant-garde painting prompted him to rethink his artistic means. Rejecting the bleak palette and crude forms he had employed in his previous paintings, van Gogh set about assimilating the art of the Impressionists, notably their broken brushwork and vibrant use of color. Simultaneously, he came to terms with the quasi-scientific method of Georges Seurat, whose Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884) he discovered at the final Impressionist exhibition, which opened a few months after his arrival in the capital. In 1888 van Gogh went to Arles, where he devised a highly personal style characterized by decorative clarity, expressive drawing, and violent chromatic contrasts. But it was during his two-year Paris sojourn that he laid the foundation for the achievement of his final years.

In this transitional period, van Gogh —- who had never before executed a self-portrait —- produced at least twenty-four images of himself, in which we can measure his adaptation of new ideas to his own expressive ends. The format of ths example evokes traditional conventions of the genre, but the technique is thoroughly modern. The face is rendered in brusque strokes of bright color, and the coat and background are a vibrating flux of dots and dashes. Juxtaposing complementary colors, for example red and green (in the beard, as well as the background), van Gogh demonstrated his awareness of Neo-Impressionist practice. He would soon abandon Pointillist handling, but Seurat’s poetic notion of a "harmony of contrasts" would continue to haunt his imagination.

Vincent van Gogh painted his first known self-portrait in 1886, following the model of the 17th-century Dutch artist Rembrandt. But by the time he made this work, a year later, he had clearly shifted his allegiance from the Old Masters to the Parisian avant-garde. Under the influence of Neo-Impressionist color theory, he based this painting on the contrast of complementary colors. The overall blue-green tone of the background serves as a foil to the orange-red of the artist's hair and beard. While the intensity of the colors is enhanced by the brushwork, the painting's energy and turbulence hint at the inner life of the artist.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864-1901)
Ambassadeurs: Aristide Bruant (1892)
Lithographic poster in 6 colors, 150 x 100 cm.

Aristide Bruant (1851–1925) was a French cabaret singer, comedian, and nightclub owner. He is best known as the man in the red scarf and black cape featured on these posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. He has also been credited as the creator of the chanson réaliste musical genre.

Born Louis Armand Aristide Bruand in the village of Courtenay, Loiret in France, Bruant left his home in 1866 at age fifteen, following his father's death, to find employment. Making his way to the Montmartre Quarter of Paris, he hung out in the working-class bistros, where he finally was given an opportunity to show his musical talents. Although bourgeois by birth, he soon adopted the earthy language of his haunts, turning it into songs that told of the struggles of the poor.

Bruant began performing at cafe-concerts and developed a singing and comedy act that led to his being signed to appear at the Le Chat Noir club. Dressed in a red shirt, black velvet jacket, high boots, and a long red scarf, and using the stage name Aristide Bruant, he soon became a star of Montmartre, and when Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec began showing up at the cabarets and clubs, Bruant became one of the artist's first friends.

In 1885, Bruant opened his own Montmartre club, a place he called "Le Mirliton". Although he hired other acts, Bruant put on a singing performance of his own. As the master of ceremonies for the various acts, he used the comedy of the insult to poke fun at the club's upper-crust guests who were out "slumming" in Montmartre. His vaudeville-inspired mix of song, satire and entertainment developed into the musical genre called "chanson réaliste" (realist song).

Bruant died in Paris and was buried in the cimetière de Subligny, near his birthplace in the département of Loiret. A street in Paris was named in his honor.

Les Ambassadeurs is a restaurant in Paris, situated in the Hôtel de Crillon, facing the Place de la Concorde in the heart of the city. Built in 1758, it has operated as a restaurant within the hotel since the mid 19th century.

Decorated in an 18th century rococo style, Les Ambassadeurs reached its peak of fame as a restaurant and nightclub (known as a café-concert) in the 1870s 80s and 90s, a few hundred meters from the Palais Garnier. Always a center of entertainment for the aristocracy, in the 1870s it was a regular destination of some of the best known figures of art and the demi-monde. Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec portrayed visitors at the night club, and Aristide Bruant performed there.

LA TEMPORADA DE LAS LIGEREZAS New noir fiction of Alejandro Marin On this occasion it is the murder of an important Italian-Argentine industrialist which summons Jordi Gonorria, economist and almost professional of the kitchen, and the commissioner Quito Verdudo. The fiction takes place in Punta del Este, surely the point for the leisure with more international character of South America. It develops in that frivolous environment that clothes the vulgarity of its summer time, disguised by the strokes of refinement that give a certain distinction to the place. With all the characters that populate each season. Including the "celebrities", the arrivistes and the scoundrels. And the display of power and unconcern that allows abundance. Atmosphere that invites you to be carried away by the always welcome worldly pleasures, abandoning s*xual praxis and prudish ways. An entertaining narration, which also leads us to know cooking stories, economic enigmas, and colorful and unplanned earthly entanglements of distinguished intellectuals.
