Carissa Songalia, Executive Director of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), asked me to fill up a 15-minute survey from AARP. She also asked me to forward this survey to my family and friends.

The survey’s questions were very insightful and especially helpful to adults aged 50 and over in your household.

The first part of the survey is relevant to US citizens who voted in the November elections.

I hope you can participate in this survey. It would help AARP with addressing the needs of Asians and Pacific Islanders.

Please answer the online survey at https://bit.ly/filamsurveyaarp?

Thanks!

A Filipino American Immigrant Unlearns Racism

I learned a lot from Jon Melegrito during my active NaFFAA days. He is one of my prime role models of community empowerment. Thank you, Jon!

Jon Melegrito: "We came to this country with different experiences. I remember in high school in our town in Nueva Ecijal, falling in love more with US history than Philippine history. But that's what was emphasized in our curriculum, to the point where I didn't feel proud as a Filipino. We watched mostly Western movies, white cowboys killing the brown skinned native Americans (pejoratively called Indians by white settlers). White superiority was ingrained in my head subconsciously. My mom taught me poetry by American and European authors. We were steeped in Methodist Hymnals: Onward Christian Soldiers. I went to church only because of the taste of Grape Welsh juice during communion. I can go on and on. Lots to unlearn. After reading Coming Full Circle by Leny Strobel I had a painful awakening, It's not true, after all, that Filipinos are doomed to fail. That's why we identified with white privilege so we will succeed. And that's how black America has also been made to feel, that they, we, are all doomed to fail. This is a moment for all of us to rise."

https://nextdaybetter.com/story/a-filipino-american-immigrant-unlearns-racism/

“I will confess that I’ve had anti-Black sentiments. I don’t make any excuses. When we first moved to Washington DC, we moved into an apartment that was predominantly Black. It was in the ‘60s and we just got married. And there was a swimming pool in our apartment and I told my wife not to g...

There are many incarnations of The Philippine Dress, depending on what region you come from. The terno is one of these cultural contributions.

Here is 1 hour and 45 minutes of video to showcase this year’s innovative, fabulous designs.

BUY TICKETS NOW for NaFFAA's 20th anniversary on OCT 21st! The 20th Anniversary Gala The National Federation of Filipino American Associations is proud to be hosting our 20th Anniversary Gala at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. The event will be held during Filipino American History Month on Saturday October 21, 2017. In 1997 during the first National Empowerment Conference, over 1,000 delegates from various Filipino American organizations across the United States endorsed the formation of a new national federation to help amplify and unite the diverse voices of our community into one clear, powerful voice. In 1998 during the second National Empowerment Conference at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, delegates unanimously ratified NaFFAA’s Constitution and By-Laws, formalizing NaFFAA’s organizational structure. With our theme “NaFFAA 2.0,” NaFFAA will recognize the legacy and accomplishments of the organization over the past 20 years, and highlight our comprehensive vision to unite and amplify the voices of the four million Filipinos and Filipino Americans living in the United States. “NaFFAA 2.0” represents how NaFFAA is honoring its past while forging a new forward-thinking and balanced approach in uniting, engaging, and empowering diverse Filipino American individuals and community organizations. NaFFAA’s 20th Anniversary Gala is expected to draw more than 750 attendees and media representatives from across the country and will feature prominent speakers, performers, and dignitaries. During the Gala, NaFFAA will recognize and award key Filipino American leaders, organizations, and corporate partners. NaFFAA will also showcase the collaboration between all generations: from students and young professionals, business leaders and elected officials, to community leaders and allies. Your support will help ensure the continuation and success of our work to empower Filipinos and Filipino Americans in the United States and promote leadership development, civic engagement, and national advocacy for our community. We thank you for your support, and hope to see you at our 20th Anniversary Gala in the nation’s capital!
