Here is a great opportunity I had recently through the Geography department.

On Friday, Nov. 3, Geography students Katlyn Barbee, Alexander Donley, Tomas Lespada and Colton Swauger traveled to Salisbury University for the Mid-Atlantic Division (MAD) meeting of the Association of American Geographers. At the conference, students saw both presentations and posters devoted to topics of geographic significance throughout our region. They attended a Career Panel featuring five professional geographers, including Seth Bruin, a 2009 FSU alum currently employed with the National Geospatial-Intelligance Agency. These four students represented FSU in the MAD Geography Bowl where they faced 12 Salisbury University students, split into two teams. FSU tied Salisbury Team A in the Championship Round, though lost the tie-breaker. Katlyn Barbee and Alexander Donley were selected to represent the MAD Geography Bowl team in the World Geography Bowl to be held at the Association of American Geographers Annual Conference in April 2024 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Alexander was the MAD MVP and will thus serve as Caption of the MAD team in Hawaii.

The team was escorted by their FSU Geography Bowl sponsor, Lecturer Tracy Edwards, who is also currently serving as Chair of the MAD Region. For more information on the AAG and MAD, visit www.aag.org.
