Perennials take several years to establish. As humans, we want those beautiful blooms and fun colors now.
If you have a vision for your perennial beds, but want instant gratification, planting similar-looking annuals in a size, color and texture near your perennial plantings can give you the best of both worlds!
The annuals will grow quickly and bloom all summer while your perennials focus on establishing their roots.
We are doing just that in our new parking lot beds facing the shop.
Just Planted:
We planted the Native orange butterfly w**d perennial and paired it with a “Hot Blooded” Lantana annual.
We planted Echinops “Blue Glow” Thistle and paired it with the annual herb, Borage, to mimic blue.
We planted Native perennial Hibiscus and paired the tropical variety for instant blooms and beauty.
This strategy does require being mindful about space, making sure both your annuals and perennials have adequate root space, and making sure you don’t plant too close so that your annuals don’t overtake the perennials and steal their sunshine!
A fun way to keep perennials and annuals straight? Perennial starts with a “P” because it requires patience.
