We are so excited to introduce Maree, our new ESL teacher!

Maree received a BA in English and in Russian with a Linguistics minor from the University of Montana. Following that, they worked as an ESL teacher in Russia for a year in 2019. Then, they got their Master's in Teaching in Secondary Education from Whitworth and spent two years subbing in Spokane Public Schools and Mead before ending up at Global Neighborhood!

They love music, linguistics, and poetry. They play piano and ukulele, and love crafting (sewing, baking, cooking, woodworking, etc.).

We’re looking forward to seeing the progress our English students can make under Maree’s instruction!

Vintage- what’s it all about, anyway? Ani, Global Neighborhood’s Retail Operations Assistant Manager, is here to explain!

Vintage is rare, special, and valuable.

Clothing is an investment. So something that will last longer, is made with better quality, and is more unique is worth the price. Higher demand for vintage pieces means higher prices. Buyers of vintage clothing are often aware of and respect the nature of vintage and its uniqueness and quality.

Wearing vintage makes a statement about who you are, your philosophy, and your ideals.

Express yourself by checking out Global Neighborhood’s Vintage section today!

We’re putting together gift baskets for our major donors as a thank-you for their dedication to Global Neighborhood’s mission! Each basket is thoughtfully filled with items from like-minded businesses that share our values: Bellden Cafe candles, which donates the proceeds from their candles to refugee job training programs, and granola bars from Beautiful Day, a company that helps refugees adjust to life in America by offering paid, on-the-job training. Donors will also find a meaningful book on race or equality to inspire further learning, plus fun Global Neighborhood stickers.

The support of our generous donors brings profound change, enabling us to provide meaningful education and development, paid job training, community connections and support. Together we are building a stronger, more inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed

To join us in this work as a major donor, consider pledging to give $85 monthly by December 1, and we’ll send a gift basket to celebrate your commitment. Thank you for making a real difference in the lives of refugees in our community.

The results are in, and although the values represented in this outcome may feel at odds with the ideals of equity, justice, and inclusion, we know this is not the end of our work to create a fairer and more compassionate society. This presidency potentially threatens the rights and acceptance of refugees and immigrants, leaving many in our communities vulnerable to policies rooted in exclusion. It’s clear that now, more than ever, our collective commitment to making a positive difference in our communities must continue.

Let this be a reminder that the path toward justice is shaped by each of us. Change doesn’t come from one administration alone but is built through everyday actions: standing up against injustice, helping those in need, and supporting organizations that align with our shared values.

If you follow this page, chances are you care about refugees and immigrants in Spokane. At Global Neighborhood, this vulnerable population can access the essential job training, English classes, and career pathways they need to lead fulfilling, successful lives in their new home thanks to donations from people like you. With your commitment, we’re tackling refugee unemployment, empowering future leaders, and building a more inclusive, resilient community. Together, we can continue to make Spokane—and beyond—a welcoming place for all. Click here to support refugees: https://www.global-neighborhood.org/give

As a note to customers and donors, our store will continue operating at its regular hours. However, please be aware that our donation drive-through may occasionally close or operate on adjusted hours to ensure the safety of our team. Thank you for your understanding and support.

Happy National Immigrant Day! 🌍

Today, we proudly celebrate the rich diversity and vibrant culture that immigrants bring to our community and country. Immigrants add unique perspectives, invaluable skills, and a sense of unity to the fabric of our nation.

Monthly donor, Sara, shares why she and her husband, Kevin, give to Global Neighborhood: “Several years ago, when our children were in their early teens, we took an East Coast trip and were able to visit Ellis Island. It was a humbling experience to think that our relatives came through Ellis Island at some point, giving us the opportunity to live in this amazing country.”

Sara said that when her daughter in law, Julie, began working at GN, she was so impressed with what she learned about the mission to serve those who are new to the US. She said her interest continued to grow as she learned about all the unique ways GN helps the community- by holding English language classes, providing employment training, and providing jobs to refugees.

“We see Global Neighborhood as a Spokane example of Ellis Island. We will continue to support this amazing place and we urge other like-minded folks to do the same,” she said.

Today on World Students’ Day, we want to give a huge shoutout to all the incredible students in our English as a Second Language classes who are putting in the work to better themselves, increase their earning potential, and ease their transition to life in the US.

We’d like to celebrate the 10 students who achieved an English level gain in their classes last quarter. Extra kudos goes to 3 of those students who moved up from a level 0 (little to no understanding of English) to a level 1, one of the hardest gains to make!

The dedication and perseverance of our students are truly inspiring, and we couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments. They’re not just learning a language, they’re opening doors to a brighter future!

You can support English classes for refugees here: https://www.global-neighborhood.org/give

Meet Mujtaba! Originally from Afghanistan, Mujtaba has been part of our warehouse team since last July. His friendliness and hard work make him a huge asset to GNT&V!

We’d like to celebrate Mujtaba on his on-the-job creativity, including his recent heroic feat of saving a baby hawk from our warehouse! Mujtaba crafted a lasso-like contraption to safely capture the hawk, which had been trapped in the building for several days. After carefully providing the distressed bird with some food and water, Mujtaba set it free, releasing the hawk back into the wild where it belongs. 🦅

Did you know every single piece of clothing you own was made by hand?

When purchasing clothes online or in stores, we are so removed from the supply chain that it’s easy to forget that each item was made by a person. From the stitching to the finishing touches, countless hours of skilled labor went into creating your favorite garments.

Despite advances in machinery, most clothing is still hand-sewn or hand-assembled. Cutting fabrics, stitching, adding buttons, zippers, and other finishing details require human labor, especially in mass manufacturing.

The garment industry employs over 60 million workers worldwide, many of whom work in factories where clothes are made by hand. Much of this labor comes from countries like Bangladesh, Vietnam, India, and China, where human sewing is still essential. In many fast fashion factories, garment workers are paid below a living wage, work excessive hours, and are exposed to unsafe environments.

Ontop of that, textile waste is a huge issue globally. Of the 100 billion garments produced each year, 92 million tons end up in landfills That’s the equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothes being dumped on landfill sites every second.

This system hurts people and the planet—but there’s a better way. By reducing. consumption, shopping second-hand, and supporting sustainable brands, we can help combat these issues and create a more ethical and eco-friendly fashion system.

This week, we bid farewell to Denise, our beloved ESL teacher.

There is no place for hate in our community.

Immigrants bring with them not only their love and hard work but also a richness of culture and a spirit of community that makes our country stronger. It’s essential to remember that we are, at our core, a nation of immigrants—each of us connected through stories of seeking new opportunities, freedom, and a better future.

Refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants are human beings with the same hopes, dreams, and aspirations that we all share. They, like anyone else, deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and empathy. When we allow misinformation and lies to spread, especially for political gain, we perpetuate harm against people who have already faced unimaginable struggles, leaving behind their homes and families in search of safety.

At Global Neighborhood, we proudly stand with our immigrant and refugee friends and neighbors, helping them build successful and fulfilling lives here in Spokane. Together, we are creating a more compassionate, inclusive community.
We invite you to stand with us, reject hate, and combat misinformation by supporting our programs. Your donations help ensure that every person who seeks refuge here can find hope, opportunity, and belonging.

Join us in building a stronger community. Find out how to contribute here: https://www.global-neighborhood.org/give
