02/17/2021

As a part of our recognition of the importance of Black History Month, Presbyterian Homes is celebrating our Black staff members. Meet Reverend Leslie Green, Administrator of Community Life since 2016!

What led you to this career?

My husband commuted to work with an attorney working for a faith-based life plan community. He knew me and my marketing work in a different not-for-profit business and invited me to join the company as an administer-in-training. This opened up a career opportunity in a field I wasn’t aware could offer so much variety and touch the lives of seniors and their families.

What’s something that has surprised you about your chosen career path?

My first day working in skilled care, I met a resident who touched my heart with her passion for life, humor and warmth even though she had complex medical needs. Since then, I have dedicated a big part of my life and study in a field with avenues in research, training and administration which I find is a most rewarding experience.

What’s a work-related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?

My grandmother had Alzheimer’s disease and was cared for in my aunt’s home. That experience motivated me to design and create person-centered memory care units and dementia enrichment programs both here in Illinois and Virginia Beach. The work and training I did was based on my vision for an environment and programs my grandmother would have thrived in and enjoyed her life to the fullest.

What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?

As an ordained minister, I’m part of a pastoral care team providing ministerial support to a congregation of 4,000 locally and outreach internationally. I love to cook, watch football, travel, listen to music and read.

Who inspires you?

My mother had a high-school education yet was an exceptional pianist who filled our home with classical music. She was the most knowledgeable woman I knew because she was always reading. I’m the woman I am today because of her. The other person who inspires me is my pastor. He is not only a Bishop; he is a physician specializing in hematology and oncology. He has shaped me spiritually and naturally to be a servant-leader in healthcare and ministry. His analytical, clinical acumen coupled with his love of God and people keeps me striving to be the hands and heart of God in all I do.
