June is Pride Month, honoring the incredible contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s a time of celebration and reflection across the country to commemorate June 28, 1969, the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots — a series of gay rights demonstrations that gave birth to the LGBTQ+ movement. We rejoice with and uplift our friends and family in solidarity. Happy Pride! 😊🏳️‍🌈

Hula

When asked why hula is important to Hawaiian culture, professional dancer Kapua Dalire-Moe said, "Hula perpetuates Hawaiian culture. It is the vessel that keeps our stories and traditions alive as we pass them on to future generations." For Kapua and many other Hawaiians, hula is more than just a form of dance, but a way to preserve the culture and identity of people rooted in tradition. In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we worked with Kapua to create a video and learn more about the ancient form of dance. Watch and share the video to #CelebrateAAPI culture.

Taiko

To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we created a video with performer, composer and teacher, Kenny Endo, to learn more about taiko and its contributions to Japanese American culture and beyond. Taiko is an ancient Japanese form of percussion, over 2,000 years old, yet remains relevant today. Watch and share the video below to #CelebrateAAPICulture with us.

"I'd like to compare Chinese calligraphy to hula in the Hawaiian culture; there is so much more than the words written or the dances you see. It's the wisdom that was passed down from generations to generations. I have this innate spatial ability to write on a large blank sheet of paper, just like the hula dancers know how to navigate the dance floor and captivate their audience. It's the result of thousands of hours of practice that makes our performances look ever so effortless." After 34 years, Ina Chang still loves practicing Chinese calligraphy and sharing the art form.

To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we worked with Ina to design two worksheets so that you can create the symbols for “peace” and “love” from home! Try your hand at it and let us know how you did in the comments below. #CelebrateAAPICulture
