The Venus Flytrap will only close its toothy jaws after small stiff hairs on the inside of the trap, known as "trigger hairs", are touched twice. In this very short video (34 seconds), watch as we touch the trigger hairs with a piece of wire, and cause the trap to snap shut. Only a live insect will be digested by a Venus Flytrap. The insect must continue to struggle so the trigger hairs will be touched again and again causing the trap to close tighter each time until it's sealed shut. It's still somewhat of a scientific mystery, as to how this process works without the use of nerve cells or muscle cells to account for such a quick reaction.
