Lick Run Farm and Community Market

Lick Run Farm and Community Market Refining the interdependence within our community to meet evolving needs. The Lick Run Community Development Center is an experiment in neighborhood revitalization in the Washington Park neighborhood of Roanoke.

The primary goal of neighborhood revitalization is to be kick started by first utilizing the property as a sustainable farm which feeds into an onsite public market.

Hey farm (and Facebook) friends! 🌾🤠🌾

Happy Sunday afternoon, hopefully you’re all enjoying the ~now~ seasonally appropriate October weather!

You might’ve noticed a few missing Thursday updates. That’s because we’ve been working on developing Instagram content. Our regular posts will now be on that platform, with more significant information being posted over here on good ol’ Facebook.

We will try to make sure that whatever goes up on Insta is visible here too, but go follow @lickrunfarmcm to make sure you can see all this cool content! 👇👇

🚨THURSDAY UPDATE🚨

Lots of ongoing construction projects saw crucial and critical developments. Much of our time this week was spent cleaning up after the excavator which revealed that the rubble from previous construction on the farm’s property was simply buried. We did manage to make great progress with regard to our drain system. Hopefully clean up will be quick so that we might be able to get back to the tasks we had to put on hold.

Thank you for everyone who has followed us on Instagram! We look forward to interacting with you there too.

🚨THURSDAY UPDATE🚨

Our workshop is really coming together! We will have a mini-excavator on site Monday to help dig the lines that will later have pipe installed to redirect water and dig out the foundation for a small pole barn. Some friends of the farm also have us a hand installing gutters and downspouts as we await rainfall from Dorian. Fresh paint has started to be applied to the workshop so make sure to drive by and see just how good everything is looking!

As we prepare beds for fall planting, we also must reluctantly give our intern back to school. She will stay on managing our social media and popping in whenever it’s possible. This means that any of you who would like to come give a go at gardening, are good with a hammer, or are simply available would be a great help to us! You don’t have to have a green thumb or know your way around a circular saw to come help out. In fact, you can send us a direct message and we will be happy to tell you about available opportunities that fit into your interests.

Once again, wishing everyone a safe week, especially our east coast pals.

🚨 (belated)THURSDAY UPDATE 🚨

A very busy week on the farm with lots of visitors. We welcomed volunteers that are installing gutters as we prepare for potential rainfall from Hurricane Dorian, program leaders from Virginia Tech, and a very helpful HVAC crew.

Hollins University's dining hall has graciously agreed to provide four 35 gallon bins for natural products/food waste which our intern will monitor and transport to the property. It will be used to reintroduce nitrogen into depleted soil and (get this) be turned into compost that community members can take home for their own use! We will keep you updated so you might all come by for a bucket or two once it is available!

We would like to wish everybody a safe and dry week. Keep watching our page for big updates and look out for these posters around town:

🚨 THURSDAY UPDATE 🚨

This week saw the completion of the new fence. We still had some deer visit the garden so the next few days will be spent assembling the materials to build a permanent main gate. The fence has also been equipped with flagging tape which will help the deer see that there is, in fact, something between them and the fresh kale that they’re eyeing.

One of the water lines put up a fight with us this morning after we tried to do repairs. Luckily, we were able to put a spigot in the thermoplastic PE pipes and clamp it down enough to retain use.

We have been in contact with Black Dog Salvage about some oddities that have been collecting dust here at Lick Run (including a spiral staircase). Additionally, the dining hall at a local university has agreed to meet with us to discuss becoming a provider of compostable materials.

Big things are coming!!

🚨 THURSDAY UPDATE 🚨

Back on our BCS! Last week, the choke on the tractor was stuck so we could not run the machine. Fortunately, it was an easy fix because this week we needed it to collect lots of sedan grass that will be used to protect and refertilize some beds. Tremendous progress was also made in the greenhouse where a new tarp flooring will be installed this coming week to keep unwanted growth out.

A big thanks to Hollins University’s theatre department which gave us two student built sawhorses to keep here at Lick Run.

Make sure to stay cool everyone. We look forward to seeing you all on the farm soon!

🚨THURSDAY UPDATE🚨

This week has been a hot one, but lots of important things have happened! In addition to welcoming an intern from Hollins University we have picked up soil sample kits, finished the east side of the new fence, and poured nearly 400 pounds of concrete in the house.

Be on the lookout for more information as we begin to plan ways for the community to be active here at Lick Run.

Yesterday was the last day at Lick Run for another great group of Michigan State students. We've hosted a group from MSU for three of the last four years for Alternative Spartan Break. And it's always a great pleasure. This year the crew set some 50 t posts for deer fencing, braced the corners, prepped, weeded, and applied compost to garden beds, moved a ton of wood chip mulch into the forest garden, and planted flats of leeks, spring onions, kale, and lettuce in our small greenhouse. Many, many thanks to Alyssa, Cheyanne, Dan, Jim, Matt, and Raye for taking their spring break week to come and work at the farm. You're always welcome here.

General information

In 2010 this parcel of land was riddled with trash and weeds and the old farm house was dilapidated. Rick Williams, the project founder, organized a clean up effort with the help of local volunteers and started a complete 180 with the land. The market space will provide access to fresh fruit and vegetables for an area that the USDA has deemed a food desert and also provide an outlet for residents to market their value added goods, wares, and crafts. . The clean up effort has been intensive with three tractor trailers full of trash being hauled away and a massive restoration effort on the house begun. Hunter Hartley, a driving force in the ongoing experiment, is active in Lick Run’s continued development and began working this year as the onsite manager of the farm and Lick Run Market.
