Restoring Old Windows is Better for the Environment…And Your Pocketbook
Americans demolish 200,000 buildings annually. This creates 124 million tons of debris 3. When homeowners replace their windows, they contribute to that debris. Restoring old windows is more environmentally-friendly than sending them to the dump.

Many homeowners believe that restoring their existing windows will be too expensive. This isn’t actually true. Repairs in older windows can make them fully operational again: cleaning or replacing metal parts; cutting loose paint; and sealing off drafts with new glass putty, weatherizing materials and wood repairs. The costs to have professionals restore older windows is less than full window replacement .Homeowners can do the restoration themselves using efficient tools, techniques, and materials, to lower costs even more.

To start the window restoration process, use SpeedheaterTM Infrared Paint Removers to quickly and efficiently strip old, dry paint and failed window glazing. For more information about our safe paint removal products, contact us at Eco-Strip.

Speedheater™ designs their paint scrapers using high quality materials. Constructed of spring steel, Speedheater™’s blades do not bend or chip when they hit nails and screws like thinner, cheaper metal scrapers do. Speedheater™ blades have very sharp, beveled edges which are much sharper than most cheaper scrapers’ edges. The Speedheater™ blade edges are slightly convex which make scraping faster yet less damaging to wood. These edges easily cut through all the layers of heated, soft paint down to the wood surface. When pulled, not pushed across the surface, they create large pieces of paint waste. These larger pieces are much easier to collect and dispose of than the smaller pieces and the dust left from uneven-edged, dull scrapers. In addition, the nicked and cracked blades of lower quality scrapers require more scraping strokes to remove all the paint down to the bare wood. More scraping means greater chances dry scraping and releasing toxic dust and paint chips into the work area and environment.

I’m sold. The Eco-Strip cobra is worth every penny. Last fall, I stripped these doors 4 times, but could not get all the paint off. One swipe with the cobra then scraper and it cleaned everything so easily. Even in the detailed areas. Plus, no goopy stinky mess.

The door on the right is nearly complete and the left is only with stripper.

*** FAQ ***

When is the best time of year to strip paint using infrared heat?

Paint can be removed with infrared at any time of the year, including winter. However, if the ambient air temperature around the work area is below 50℉, the heating time will greatly increase. The wood is much colder at the start. In addition, the cold air quickly cools down the heated paint and makes it re-adhere and harden again. It will me more effective and efficient to find a heated facility or to wait until warmer weather. Windy conditions can reduce the effectiveness of the Speedheater™. Wind may blow away the infrared rays which need to stay pointed directly at the painted surface to be most effective. Protecting a work area from wind prevents this.

Tips and Tools for Achieving Better Painting Results

This is another good list of painting tips. However, we strongly disagree about “locking down peeling paint”. By looking at the demonstration photo, we question if the product endorsed “hides minor surface cracks and evens out the irregularities of a weathered or scraped surface.” Their results look "quick and dirty” to us.

Do you think the new paint, even over that “super-thick film,” will last as long as totally removing all the paint down to the bare wood before repainting?

Window glass prior to the 1950’s is considered historical or antique glass. Each type of this glass has a unique look and feel. Wavy glass and bullseye glass are the most common historical glass in the 19th and 20th centuries. These windows tell the history of a building. Restoring not replacing them maintains the historical look and integrity of an older building.

Applying a fresh layer of paint is one of the fastest ways to update an older home. For new paint to be long-lasting, all the layers of old paint should be removed down to the bare wood. New paint allows you to modernize without changing any of the special features or characteristics of the home.

However, you need to take care when removing old paint. The paint in older homes might contain lead. This is true even if the house was recently repainted, as the bottom layers under the new paint might contain lead. Testing for the presence of lead can be simple and cheap with LeadCheck swabs from a hardware store. If you find lead in any paint in your home, assume it is present in all your paint. More thorough but expensive testing can be done by a licensed lead inspector to pinpoint specific areas where lead is present. This testing can help you prioritize your paint stripping projects. For example, high traffic areas such as floors or features where there is friction between moving parts such as windows and doors might take priority over crown molding, paneling or ceilings

Using a quality infrared heat stripping product such as Speedheater™ makes it possible to remove all layers of paint while minimizing the risk of lead poisoning. Used properly, the Speedheater™ infrared rays warm paint only to the point at which it can be easily scraped away. Low-heated paint does not create toxic lead fumes. Using the Speedheater™ enables quick and easy removal of paint in soft pieces, simplifies collection and disposal, and reduces the chance of paint chips or dust entering the environment.

Who is Eco-Strip?

We are the exclusive US Distributor of the Speedheater™ Infrared Paint Removal System. The Speedheater™ Standard 1100 and Speedheater™ Cobra use infrared rays to quickly warm paint and wood for easy stripping. The process is safe with no lead fumes and clean with little paint dust. The resulting wood surface is bare and immediately ready for priming and painting. No other paint removal method can achieve these high-quality results with so few steps! This method also reduces the risk of fire, environmental damage, and clean up time.

Heat has been used for decades to strip paint. Heat stripping with other methods is dangerous. Infrared heat allows you to work much faster than with a standard heat gun without working harder. Infrared heat stripping is quick and easy with Speedheater™ products. These innovative paint strippers work by gently heating paint to the point at which it can be safely removed. Speedheater™ products draw the natural wood resins back to the wood’s surface, effectively rejuvenating it.

We love talking to customers and helping them with their paint stripping projects.

Bought the Speedheater Cobra from Eco-strip to remove the extern Awlwood varnish from my Cabo Rico 38. The Speedheater Cobra is an amazing tool for quickly lifting the varnish. We were able to clean nearly 80 feet of cap rail and the lazeratte cover in two days, whereas a heat gun would have taken weeks. Glad to share our video.
Does your product contain any corn-derived ingredients? And is there a way to get it in Canada, other than through subscription? We have a zero-waste grocery store in my town, and I think they would be interested in carrying them.
1886 woodwork that was covered by a dozen or more coats of paint...no match for my Cobra!
Any idea when the Cobra will be in stock to purchase?
Last Thursday I was talking with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kalamazoo about the glorious 1852 house they are in the process of rehabilitating. One of the volunteers had just started to sand a wonderful old door to remove the paint. I told his about the Speedheater and offered to loan mine to him for the day. Within ten minutes, he had it in his hands and finished the stripping he needed to do within an hour. The Old House Network has used the Speedheater in numerous window and paint strupping workshops and we have taught well over 100 people how to use it for all their paint stripping projects. I have used the Speedheater to strip furniture, woodwork and fancy gingerbread. (I told my husband I want the Cobra for my Christmas present!)
