House of Swank Clothing Company - home of the raddest NC-themed t-shirts and swag.
John Pugh was playing music gigs and open mic nights on his homemade lunch box guitar, the Fritocaster under the name Johnny Swank. See, John hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2000 and Johnny Swank was his trail name. Made a fine enough stage name because some of his favorite people that know him best from the trail called him Swank. Sometimes we are best known by the things we do in our free time. Sometimes we are our best representatives of who we are from 5-9 rather than 9-5.
On many nights in the early oughts, you could find him playing electrified blues and haunting slide guitar. As a project in creating music merchandise (and to cover his bar tab), John bought a $50 screen printing kit and a few t-shirts from the craft store. John screen printed some “Johnny Swank Blues” shirts and and and “I
Keen on his new project he made a few more shirts just for himself. One was the Mason Jar Moonshine design and the other was the shape of North Carolina, but on a non-university color blue shirt with orange ink. The mason jar has long been associated with backwoods moonshine production in North Carolina and John’s grandfather was said to have been associated with moonshining in his hometown of Climax, NC. As a native North Carolinian, John wanted to represent his state without having to have it associated with a university rivalry, so he chose colors that were not affiliated with the local universities.
John wore his new shirts around town on evenings and weekends. He loved the feeling of being able to represent his state of NC and some of his local heritage In the grocery store, at gigs, and on the street people would ask where he got his shirts. He was happy to say that he had made them and could sell them at his next gig or online. This interest led to a few more trips to the craft store. ` John would make two shirts and sell them then run to the craft store to buy four more.
Screen printing in the kitchen soon expanded to fill more and more space in the small apartment. John would print a handful of shirts and his wife, Jessica, would hang them on a clothesline across the apartment and cure them with a hand held heat gun no bigger than a blowdryer. As more people would stop John to ask where he got his shirts it became clear that this was becoming more than a small hobby.
In the summer of 2012, John shifted from before work, after work, and weekends at House of Swank to full-time Swank Life.
In the summer of 2013, House of Swank was out of our kitchen and renting a small studio space in Raleigh.
At the start of 2014, Jessica Robinson shifted from before work, after work, and weekends at House of Swank to a full-time role overseeing operations.
House of Swank has grown from a maker hobby to a business organically. John and Jessica make products that let you represent your mood, heritage, hometown, or state with some humor. We hope you enjoy. Thank you.
