April 2, 2020 – EPA is taking two significant steps concerning the 2015 New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for new residential wood heaters, hydronic heaters, and forced-air furnaces. First, the agency finalized the rule that was proposed November 30, 2018. In this action, the agency addressed minimum pellet requirements and other issues identified in the proposal.
In the meantime, EPA encourages affected entities to continue efforts to certify compliance with the NSPS in light of the upcoming May 15, 2020, compliance date. To this end, on August 19, 2019, the agency approved an alternative test method for forced-air furnaces, which the agency believes may facilitate the ability of manufacturers of these devices to certify compliance by the current compliance date.
Second, in the coming months, the agency is initiating a series of roundtable discussions with states and other stakeholders to inform the agency’s direction toward a cord wood-based compliance test method. These discussions are intended to lay the foundation for a future test method rulemaking.

Update on the manufacturing of Yukon wood burning furnaces. Sorry this has taken so long! It has been pretty tough on us for the past couple months. Perhaps you have visited our website recently only to find that, as of May 12th, we have stopped production of our quality furnace products for the United States. :( This is due to the EPA's regulation that went into effect on May 15th on all forced air furnaces that are designed to burn wood. For the past 2 years we have been working diligently on our test model Husky furnace to bring it into compliance of the .93 lbs/mmBTU's, but have since switched to dialing it in to the 2020 standard of .15 lbs/mmBTU's, which goes into effect on May 15, 2020. One of the challenges has been finding local cord wood suppliers that have wood with the proper moisture content that we need to test the furnace with. Go figure...hard to find cord wood in Central MN! As our in-house testing continues and until we are ready to send the unit into the EPA approved lab for evaluation, we are limited to selling only replacement parts for the furnaces that are already in use.
It was really surprising to find that there are many of our customers, when calling in for replacement parts, were not aware of the new regulations that the EPA has put on our type of product, but it is not at all surprising that there are but a few wood furnaces available on the market for folks to choose from today. Getting a product ready for compliance to a new federal rule is not as easy as one would think, particularly when the fuel used for testing is never consistent in moisture content and the variables in burning wood are many.
All Yukon and Jack furnaces are UL and cUL (for Canada) and have been rigorously tested for safety. We are putting safety first as we continue R&D on our test model, too. Any changes and modifications that are made to the unit to comply with the EPA regulation will then be subject to review by UL. We will continue to provide updates as we progress in our efforts to get our furnaces back in the U.S. market.
Our cUL Listed Canadian model furnaces are still available for export.

For those who are curious to know what is going on inside the fire box of a Husky or Polar multi-fuel furnace - here you go! Our patented Afterburner Jet System in action. This furnace has been modified with a glass door, which is used for emissions test runs and it is the only Husky that has glass on the door - no, so sorry, but you can not buy one with a glass door.
The temperature has finally made it Above Zero @ 8 degrees F! Our shop furnace, which is one of our Polar oil/wood units has been working hard for us the past few days! The radiant heat off the fire door feels really nice :D
