The 1976 John Deere Liquidator has become quite a flagship for Deere snowmobile collectors. There are several beautiful restorations making the show circuit. In general, the engine reliability has often been maligned. This creates a concern in regards to riding them. There were issues dealing with the cam grinding of the pistons. This occurred because of the additional bulk added to the engine block after Dreyfuss design stylized the engine after reliability testing. Newly designed pistons were available in DEC75 which eliminated the concern. In addition, there was a Product Improvement Progrsm (PIP) that included the new piston installation by a Horicon factory team in AUG76. My personal belief is that most engine failures, after installation of the revised pistons, related to poor jetting.

I would also like to add that the 1976 Liquifire engines suffered a similar malady due to the added mass to the block changing expansion characteristics. These also received revised pistons to gain engine reliability.

I was thinking this morning of experiences around Horicon, WI. Activities wrapped up early one day allowing me to take in a local pub in Beaver Dam during Happy Hour. I went up to the spread set up of ground beef, onions, rye bread & salt. I looked around for a grill but did not see one. As I returned to my seat, a young lady stated "You just cost me 5 dollars." (must be a puck-ip line unique to Wisconsin 😆). I responded "How is that?" and she replied that she had bet her friend that I was going to make a sandwich. I told them that I had planned to but did not see the grill. They laughed then proceeded to explain you used the meat RAW! I said "I guess you have figured out that I am not from the area but I am not that gullible." My comment brought more laughter. As time passed and the pub became more lively, people began to go up to the table & make sandwiches. And, yes, raw ground beef, onion, salt on rye bread. I learned that these were alternately called "Cannibal" or "Tiger Meat" sandwiches. After a few drinks & encouragement from the ladies, I tried one. I was surprised how tasty it was. I understand that it is loosing popularity these days other than a Holiday tradition but it provides a great memory.
