Ottumwa's Memorial Park mountain bike trail was recently featured by Travel Iowa as one of the top Spin Your Wheels adventures in the state! You can find it here: https://www.traveliowa.com/spin-your-wheels-adventures/

Winding through the woods of Memorial Park, you’ll find a 5-mile mountain biking trail. Built by volunteers using the International Mountain Bicycling Association’s standards, these unpaved trails are designed to be a challenging off-road experience. Its special features include a switchback, jumps and a steep ravine. The main trailhead is located at the timber’s edge under the Bulldog Water Tower off Elm Street.

Would you rather your kids have a childhood grounded in "Beast Mode" (see photo) or "Couch Mode"?

We offer several kids models from brands like Haro, KinkBMX, and others, to get your little ones off on the right "track" in life.
https://harobikes.com/collections/kids
https://kinkbmx.com/collections/bikes

And, yes, there is a price difference in the models we sell and the ones sold in department/sporting goods stores. Why? Better materials, better quality, better assembly, and our brands' business models are rooted in continually "supporting the sport", not simply "pocketing profits".

Just recently, I had a customer come to me looking for a bike for their daughter, and, together, we chose the proper model to order for her. The customer did raise a question about the price, compared to the prices they'd seen elsewhere, and I assured them it was a much better bike. When it arrived, and they came to pick it up, they immediately recognized the superior quality (for example, the non-corrosive and lighter aluminum frame, versus the low-grade, corrosive, and heavier steel frame at the department store, etc.), and they expressed how happy they were that they chose to go with the better quality bike from us, for the performance, longevity, and future trade-in/resale value.

Another difference that sets our bikes apart (especially from department/sporting goods store bikes) is the time and care we take in assembling them, assuring that all areas are greased/lubricated properly from the factory, that there are no defects, and that everything is properly adjusted and operating as it should when it leaves the store. Whereas, department/sporting goods stores will merely pull the bike out of the box, slap on the pedals, front wheel, and handlebars, and then put it on the floor. While theirs might be a more "economical" (and "profitable") way to sell bikes, there is no concern for the end user (i.e., you and/or your child), and that is not a way of doing business that we feel the people in our community deserve.

We love and truly care about our customers, have pride in our community, and strive to be that honest and knowledgeable resource in the area for all things bicycle (and skateboard) related!

Thank you to all who support locally-owned, independent businesses! Small dreams lead to big dreams when you do, and it helps support and grow our community!

Talk about the best way to start your day. I received the following message (below) from a longtime customer last night, and saw it this morning. We all have those times when we wonder if what we're doing is, and the choices we've made in life are, making any kind of positive difference in the world, and whether anyone cares. I chose to move back to Ottumwa in 2000 to give the community the kind of bike shop that I always admired when I was growing up, one that not only sold cool products, but that provided inspiration to people, and that played a role in improving the community. So, my sincere thanks goes out to this "anonymous", longtime customer (who has also gone on to become a great role model in the community, by the way, and I am proud of them), your message made my day, and then some, and I wouldn't trade those days for anything, either! (I'm not crying, YOU'RE CRYING! :P )

Their message:
"Was cleaning out a box from my younger years...and ran across this scrap book. The pictures were absolutely terrible (us trying to ride wheelies), but I did smile when I saw your sticker and business card. You were a staple in my generation's life, and I wanted to thank you for that. I could only imagine how annoying it was having us broke kids come in daily asking for free stickers and wanting to watch the new biking DVD's. Seeing this brought back a lot of great memories and they all centered around your shop. Much simpler times...wouldn't trade those days for anything!"

TONIGHT IS AHFA's CHOCOLATE LOVERS EVENT! You can still get tickets at the door to bid on this bike we've donated to the event as one of the items to bid on in their silent auction!

This year, Riverside Cyclery's donation to AHFA's silent auction is this custom-built ā€œVintage Circusā€-themed BMX bike package! Rest assured, this is no "stock" bike! Our friends at AHFA always deserve something truly special for their event, so, we've built this bike with the ā€œUnder the Big Top/Vintage Circusā€ theme in mind! The raw-colored bike, with aged-looking off-white accents and vintage-looking cream-colored tires, and industrial-looking sprocket, and leather-looking seat, all pay homage to bikes and machinery of the past, but then, of course, we included touches of red and white throughout the bike to represent the trademark big top tent colors! But, aside from all of its ā€œvintage circus tie-insā€, this bike has been built to withstand some high-flying daredevil feats, and full sealed bearings, so it was built for punishment beyond your normal ā€œcircus anticsā€, so step right up and place your best bids, because this bike is worth it!

All together, this package, which includes the bike, backpack, and some other small goodies, would normally sell for around $800, but, since this is a silent auction for a charitable cause, and considering this bike is a special "Chocolate Lovers/Under The Big Top/Vintage Circus Tributeā€ custom build, who knows what bid will take it home!

All we know is somebody's going to get a heck of a bike, and American Home Finding Association is going to wisely use all of the money from this event to help area families and kids, so everyone wins!

So, before you finish off your popcorn and go home, please bid as generously as you can on this item, because it benefits one of the best non-profits Ottumwa has to offer, SINCE 1899!

Did you say you could use a training plan for RAGBRAI L (or, hey, just to be able to ride better/longer, in general)? Well, here you go!

By now you have likely seen the route announcement of the 2023 version of RAGBRAI, and this year it’s a big one being it’s the 50th anniversary ride. To celebrate, this year’s version is 500 miles and roughly follows the path of the first RAGBRAI route. It’s going to be a big celebration. It...

Ok, here it is! What you've ALL (ok, some of you, anyway :P ) been waiting for! Come one, come all! Step right up and feast your eyes on the "Vintage Circus"-themed custom bike we've built for American Home Finding Association's upcoming "Chocolate Lovers" annual fund raiser event. This bike will be part of their silent auction, so IT COULD BE YOURS! The event is FEBRUARY 10TH, HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR TICKETS YET?!?

As we've done in years past, we've, once again, done our best to capture the event theme in the build. We must say, this is one of the most eye-catching, one-of-a-kind builds we've ever done! As you can (also) see in the pic, the auction package also includes a backpack, plus some other "goodies" in the bag, which brings the total value of this auction package (bike, bag, and extras) to $800, and it's going to go to some lucky bidder! WILL IT BE YOU?!

If you want to see the complete bike up close, come downtown and you can see it sitting in our front window. We'll have it on display right up until the day of the event!

And, if you can't make it to the "Chocolate Lovers" event (which, HELLO!, all-you-can-eat CHOCOLATE!), American Home Finding Association is a non-profit charitable organization (founded in 1899!) that you can donate to any time of the year!

One final "sneak peek" (before we "Finally!" show the complete bike) of the bike we've custom built for American Home Finding Association's "Chocolate Lovers" event that is coming right up (FEBRUARY 10TH, HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR TICKETS YET?!?).

This time, the pic is part of the "control center" of the bike (and we're also including the previous pics we posted, just in case you missed them). Is everyone ready for RAGBRAI 2023?! Looks like another great route this year! 😃 http://ragbrai.com/

Ottumwa's Spoke Folk bike club (https://www.facebook.com/groups/110602645625969/) has a group of @20-30 riders that go every year, and we always welcome others who would like to join our group. As a registered bike club, we need to have our group riders' registration info received no later than March 26th, and then the deadline for refunds/cancellations is May 15th.

If you are not currently a member of Spoke Folk, and would like to join our group for RAGBRAI, please let us know soon so we can assure you a spot with the group (rider registration, transportation, etc.).

Also, if you know of anyone that lives in any of the overnight towns, that are located close to the "festivities", and wouldn't mind a nice group of "Folks" camping in the backyard for the night, let us know. šŸ˜‰

Well, it's been a few days since we posted the last "sneak peek", and American Home Finding Association's "Chocolate Lovers" event is coming right up (FEBRUARY 10TH, HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR TICKETS YET?!?), so we thought we'd post another "sneak peek" pic.

This time, the pic is of the "south end" of the bike (and we're also including the previous pics we posted, just in case you missed them). And, of course, this is the bike we've custom built for this year's "Chocolate Lovers" silent auction. Here's a couple of "teaser" pics of the bike we've custom built for this year's American Home Finding Association's annual "Chocolate Lovers" silent auction, which is FEBRUARY 10TH, SO GET YOUR TICKETS!

This year's theme is "Vintage Circus", so, as we always try to do, the bike build is our attempt to match the bike with that theme, and then, of course, we build the absolute best bike we can to help best support their event and organization. And this year was no exception, as we feel this is one of the most eye-catching builds we've ever done!

So, here is a "glimpse", for now, and then we will post another "glimpse" as we get closer to the date of the event.

(Psst... If you want to see the complete bike, just come downtown and you can see it sitting in our front window!)

And, if you can't make it to the "Chocolate Lovers" event (which, HELLO!, all-you-can-eat CHOCOLATE!), American Home Finding Association is a non-profit charitable organization (founded in 1899!) that you can donate to any time of the year!

01/13/2023

Couldn't help posting a "teaser" of the bike we're building for American Home Finding Association's annual "Chocolate Lovers" fund raising event, coming up on February 10th! ALWAYS a fantastic event, and we're proud to, once again, be a part of it by donating a bike that will be among the silent auction items being bid on. GET YOUR TICKETS!

So we're taking a Haro Downtown BMX bike model (because, just like the famous song goes, "Things will be great when you're
Downtown!"), and then customizing it (as we always do) to make it a "one-of-a-kind" bike, built specifically for the theme of this event, which this year is "Vintage Circus", so it will be built with their theme in mind.

All we can say is, IT'S GOING TO BE A BEAUTIFUL, EYE-CATCHING, HEAD-TURNING BIKE, and some lucky bidder is going to go home with it! IT COULD BE YOU!

When it's done (which is going to take us a few days, until we're certain it's "perfect"), it will be in the front windows of the shop, if you want to swing by and get a "sneak peak" of the final build!

And, if you can't make it to the "Chocolate Lovers" event (which, HELLO!, all-you-can-eat CHOCOLATE!), American Home Finding Association is a non-profit charitable organization (founded in 1899!) that you can donate to any time of the year!

07/15/2022

We have a lot of youth/teens (on bikes, skateboards, scooters, etc.) that have come through our doors over the years, and, while they're in the store (which is, of course, usually only for a few minutes), we try to be the best example and resource for them as we can be. And we know parents struggle daily, juggling work, responsibilities, bills, family, etc. Though it may be a cliche phrase, we know that "it takes a village", and we want people to know that, when your kids/teens are in our store, we do our best to set the best possible example for them and offer the best advice we can to help them while they're finding their way through life.

Dear Mom and Dad,

Please stick with me.

I can’t think clearly right now because there is a rather substantial section of my prefrontal cortex missing. It’s a fairly important chunk, something having to do with rational thought.

You see, it won’t be fully developed until I’m about 25. And from where I sit, 25 seems a long way off.

But here's what i want my parents to know..

My brain is not yet fully developed
It doesn’t matter that I’m smart; even a perfect score on my math test doesn’t insulate me from the normal developmental stages that we all go through.

Judgement and intelligence are two completely distinct things.
And, the same thing that makes my brain wonderfully flexible, creative and sponge-like also makes me impulsive. Not necessarily reckless or negligent but more impulsive than I will be later in life.

Please stick with me.

So when you look at me like I have ten heads after I’ve done something ā€œstupidā€ or failed to do something ā€œsmart,ā€ you’re not really helping.

You adults respond to situations with your prefrontal cortex (rationally) but I am more inclined to respond with my amygdala (emotionally). And when you ask, ā€œWhat were you thinking?ā€ the answer is I wasn’t, at least not in the way you are.

You can blame me, or you can blame mother nature, but either way, it is what it is.
At this point in my life, I get that you love me, but my friends are my everything.

Please understand that. Right now I choose my friends, but, don’t be fooled, I am watching you. Carefully.

Please stick with me.

Here’s what you can do for me

1. Model adulting.
I see all the behaviours that you are modeling and I hear all of the words you say. I may not listen but I do hear you. I seem impervious to your advice, like I’m wearing a Kevlar vest but your actions and words are penetrating. I promise. If you keep showing me the way, I will follow even if I detour many, many times before we reach our destination.

2. Let me figure things out for myself.
If you allow me to experience the consequences of my own actions I will learn from them. Please give me a little bit of leash and let me know that I can figure things out for myself. The more I do, the more confidence and resilience I will develop.

3. Tell me about you.
I want you to tell me all the stories of the crazy things you did as a teen, and what you learned from them. Then give me the space to do the same.

4. Help me with perspective.
Keep reminding me of the big picture. I will roll my eyes at you and make all kinds of grunt-like sounds. I will let you know in no uncertain terms that you can’t possibly understand any of what I’m going through. But I’m listening. I really am. It’s hard for me to see anything beyond the weeds that I am currently mired in. Help me scan out and focus on the long view. Remind me that this moment will pass.

5. Keep me safe.
Please remind me that drugs and driving don’t mix. Keep telling me that you will bail me out of any dangerous situation, no anger, no lectures, no questions asked. But also let me know over and over and over that you are there to listen, when I need you.

6. Be kind.
I will learn kindness from you and if you are relentless in your kindness to me, someday I will imitate that behaviour. Don’t ever mock me, please and don’t be cruel. Humour me-I think I know everything. You probably did as well at my age. Let it go.

7. Show interest in the things I enjoy.
Some days I will choose to share my interests with you, and it will make me feel good if you validate those interests, by at least acting interested.

One day when the haze of adolescence lifts, you will find a confident, strong, competent, kind adult where a surly teenager once stood. In the meantime, buckle in for the ride.

and..

Please stick with me.

Love,
Your Teenager ....

UPDATE: SOLD ON 6/16!

This beauty of a bike came in on the trade-in block yesterday!

Originally bought here by our customer in 2017, this bike has been very lightly used, and is still in amazingly excellent condition!

It's a Haro Calavera 27.5 Comp in an 18" frame size (so ideally suited for someone in the 5'10" to 6'0" height range) and originally sold for $719.99 (a comparable current-year model from Haro would be their DoublePeak 27.5 Trail, which sells for $899), and we are selling it for $349.99(+tax)!

In the condition that it is in, and the price we're selling it for, this bike won't be here long, so, if you or anyone you know are interested, contact us ASAP!

As you begin to roll this season, let’s talk about some basics so that your riding can be enjoyable!!

A- air in your tires. Check it every time you ride. Yes, even if you ride it daily. The tubes naturally lose air. This is the simplest way to keep from having pesky flats and for ease of rolling!

B- Brakes. Check your brakes. If you can’t stop. That just sucks all the fun out of the entire ride. Cable and housing needs to be replace as well as brake pads. Annual Tune ups help keep these issues under control!

C- Chain. The chain stretches. It wears out. If/when this happens, shifting gears is complicated, and can lead to major malfunctions. An annual tune up can help control the situation!

If you are unclear about any of this, please stop in! That’s what we’re here for!!

Happy Cycling!!!
