A great reason to invest in you or your kids playing music!

Hours spent practicing the piano or another musical instrument may not always be fun, but new research shows that music lessons can benefit your brain for decades. A new study in the Journal of Neuroscience reveals that individuals who had even just a few years of music lessons as children had a faster brain response to the sound of speech than children who hadn't taken lessons. What's more, these effects were still strong even if the instrument hadn't been touched in decades. Scientists at Northwestern University tested the brain responses of 44 individuals between 55 and 76 to the sound of speech. The researchers found that those people who had 4-14 years of musical training--regardless of whether they still played their instrument--responded one millisecond faster than those with less training. One millisecond might not sound like much, but it's significant in terms of neural timing, and shows that musical training in childhood can pay off for the rest of a person's life.

Practice tip of the day:#1) Memorize a song you love. When the discipline part of practicing gets you down, play that song to lift your spirits. Or just give yourself permission to improve and mess around for a few minutes, Then get back to practicing re-energized.
