The poinsettia's association with Christmas began in 16th-century Mexico, where legend tells of a girl, commonly called Pepita or Maria, who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus' birthday and was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson blossoms sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias!

Dwarf ixora and maui ixora, the smaller varieties of this lushly flowering shrub, have taken South Florida by storm. Gorgeous flowers most of the year, easy care, compact size - what's not to like?
You see them everywhere...and for good reason. These plants are dependable bloomers, love the sun, and fit nicely into any size landscape. Often planted in groups or rows for maximum color, ixoras work well with informal gardens, tropical beds, or more formal and manicured landscape designs.
Clustered blooms that attract butterflies come in a variety of colors, with the texture and shape of a fat, coconut-covered cookie.
These plants bloom heavily during warm months, and then off and on through cooler weather.

Highly decorative ruella, or "Mexican Petunia," produces endless violet-purple flowers that attract butterflies.
Looking like a cross between an ornamental grass and a flowering shrub, this hardy plant flowers every day when placed in a sunny location.
The petunia-like blooms each last only a day - but are replaced the next with more blossoms. A popular favorite in South Florida landscapes, this pretty shrub spreads and can be invasive. Plant where solid edging contains the plant or regular maintenance controls the spread. AVOID placing near areas like wetlands or preserves.
The showy purple color of the blooms works with almost all other landscape colors, and the plant's upright stems spilling over with long, thin leaves create an informal and even naturalized look.
There is a dwarf variety that can be used as a groundcover.

Birds, butterflies and hummingbirds love firebush, a wonderful wildlife plant and one of the prettiest native plants Florida has to offer.
The bright red-orange tubular flowers appear on and off all year, more in warmer weather, and in cooler months some of the slightly fuzzy leaves will turn bright red.
The bush also produces attractive black berries which attract birds.
It has an airy, informal, cottage-garden appeal and looks best (and flowers most) when left to form a natural shape rather than using hedge trimmers to keep it more manicured.

Silver buttonwood has velvety-soft leaves dusted with silvery-gray color and makes a stunning hedge, accent or small tree.
Like all silver foliage plants, this shrub's unusual color contrasts beautifully with all the green in a landscape.
It can look almost white in a landscape or take on a bluish cast. These plants are especially effective when planted in combination with red, pink, purple, blue and white flowering plants.
They can function as clipped hedge shrubs or left to grow in a more natural shape.
There is a green variety but the silver is much showier and therefore more popular with homeowners.

Clusia is a dense, neat looking tree that is very salt, wind, and drought tolerant. It is also called the autograph tree because messages can be inscribed on the leaves. It is a very hardy plant to be used indoors. It is a compact evergreen plant that has attractive pink and white flowers and unique shaped fruit that is sometimes used in flower arrangements.

The Arboricola Goldfinger, also known as Trinette, is a variegated style of the Arboricola. It is a common foundation plant often pruned to use as a hedge but it can grow to 8-10 feet. The shrub is moderately salt-tolerant and very drought-tolerant with beautiful gold and green foliage. The plant can tolerate some frost to temperatures in the upper 20’s making it a dependable evergreen plant.
