Rocky is a moyen poodle and loves the lower sound of the bassoon more than oboe. Loves treats more than bassoon, and he loves romping around more than anything.

Three Things To Try Out Now:

Create A Goal
Set A Due Date
Complete One Goal At A Time

For every day you don’t practice, 2 days of practice are needed to return to where you left off.

Months in “solitary confinement”, without gigs, and without rehearsals. Yuck. Maybe I could settle for not backsliding. Nah. Gigs are coming, this weird “new normal” will change yet again, and I want to be ready to make music outside my practice room.

If you’re anything like me, you’re not enjoying solitary music making as much. You ran out of excerpts, went long on long tones, and now you know all the pentatonic scale patterns. The mish-mash of this gets old.

The way I stay sane:

I create a goal – let’s say learning how to double tongue.
I make a reasonable guess how long it will take me to get good enough that I would let someone else hear me double tongue. Let’s say three weeks. Okay, get started . . .

But WAIT! I could learn to circular breath. Or, I could get solid on The Swan of Tuonela, or Rite of Spring. Or – or – or – STOP.

One goal at a time. Concentrate your work on that one goal. If it takes less time than you thought, don’t be surprised. If it takes a lot longer, don’t stop. Keep at your goal.

While you are doing this whole “goal oriented” thing, you’re creating a directed path for your musical energy. I promise – it will keep you excited, learning, challenged.

What a feeling to come to rehearsal with fresh energy plus a deepened sense of your own ability.

If you want it, strive for it, earn it, enjoy it.

Thanks for another great year! Let's have a party?

Recently we've been in surprise contact with some of our customers and friends from our New York days 37 years ago. It's a delightful "when it rains it pours" kind of experience.

Pedro Rivera, the famous repair tech at Ponte Music company is living (and repairing instruments) in Puerto Rico. We spoke last week for the first time in over 30 years just catching up and reminiscing. He says hi to everyone!

The daughter of Ponte's significant other made surprise contact and we're going to share photos and stories soon. Great friends from Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn and West 46th Street where we started Charles Double Reed Company have called and chatted too.

This COVID based separation has given people time to slow down and look back over what has been. Even as we contemplate the unsure future, we can take great courage from what has been.

Another delightful happening is the steady stream of folks calling us to get started playing oboe or bassoon again after many years. We are so excited to get people back into the soul satisfying world of double reeds.

Are people calling you, too? Old friends, teachers, long lost family members? Or maybe just bill collectors ;)

Live music is a momentary experience. Here and then gone. It draws its substance from the past and yet offers us so many fresh future possibilities.

How do we get through this continuing pandemic? By dreaming of the past, creating our own futures, and playing music. At least that's my way.

Most Sincerely, Brian Charles

38th Anniversary Party?

You're Invited!

Although none of us can really go to a party, we thought we'd share our thanks and appreciation for the double reed communities support by pretending we're all at an after concert party.

We're having lots of fun - and we hope you are too! Stay late, have some snacks, and share your music with us all, if only in spirit.

07/12/2020

We now have phone hours from 10 until 2 Monday through Thursday. These will expand as the pandemic wanes. If you call at other times, just leave a message. We'll get back to you as quickly as possible. Our number is (603) 356-9890 and you can always email us at [email protected]

03/26/2020

Hi, I'm Brian (the owner). Our walk-in shop is not open and for a music store it's been really quiet around here.

Happily, our website is fully updated and always open. Our phone hours are not as regular, but we answer all calls (603) 356-9890.

We all have a lot of down time for practicing and reed making. Now would be a great time to pick up some supplies and buy a few gift certificates for later use.

We love and miss you guys and hope that we all get back to making music very soon!

We donated our entire stock of N95 face masks to our local hospital yesterday. We use face masks when working on dirty instruments. They need them more than we do. Consider donating rubber gloves, face masks, and anything else that will make our hospitals a safer place for those who take care of us.

03/19/2020

For the safety of our customers and staff, our retail shop will be closed as of 3/19/20 for at least a week. Our website and online sales are open and we will ship everything except materials that have to be tested by mouth. Those items will be marked as temporarily unavailable. Be safe everyone!
