Our next stop on ThamesGiving's History of Thames Street is the Brick Market building located at 127 Thames Street!
Built in 1762, this historic landmark has gone through many transformations over the years. Originally, it served as an open-air market where merchants sold their wares. Its location was strategic, near the bustling wharves where ships unloaded goods and in the center of town for easy access to the community.
Over time, the Brick Market has been home to a printing shop, city hall, a theater, a furniture store (as shown in the photo), and a gift shop. Today, it houses the Museum of Newport History & Shop, making it a fascinating stop on the ThamesGiving Map!!
πPlus, when you find their copper pumpkin, you gain free entry to visit the Museum upstairs!π
While you're exploring Newportβs rich history, consider supporting the Newport Historical Societyβs Toy Drive to benefit the MLKCC Santaβs Workshop. Itβs a great way to give back and spread holiday cheer in our community this Giving Season!
