We are a group of pottery artists dedicated to honing our craft in this cooperative studio space. Our gallery does not currently have official hours.
Pottery 51 is a cooperative arts center dedicated to the continuation of North Carolina’s rich pottery tradition; providing facilities for students, potters and clay artists to expand and nurture their creative expression and artistic skills. However, if you drive by and see our OPEN sign on, that means an artist is working and happy to invite you in! You may also schedule an appointment by messaging us on Facebook.
Did you know that our retail gallery is open every 2nd Saturday of the month? With nearly 30 local artists working out of our studio, our gallery is constantly changing.

Our sweet studio member made a whole flock of birds for a garden totem project in conjunction with Carolina Clay Matters. The guild Garden Project will culminate in November with an epic exchange of handcrafted pieces. We have multiple P51 members involved in this project. Can’t wait to see these birds fly off to their new homes and see the final stacks!!! Nice job Nelly!

Some of the pots from our Raku firings. Lots of glaze experiments and horsehair pieces. What fun!
On May 15, we had an alternative firing day! We fired pots in 2 raku kilns (custom built by our members) and also did a barrel firing. We learned a lot about glazes, reduction, and fire! Most importantly we had a great time being together on a beautiful day.
We’re thrilled to have some pottery from our artists on display ! We love this town and are proud to support local businesses.

Our spring production is ramping up with many of our potters participating in the upcoming Carolina Clay Matters Pottery Market! So you can imagine what a wrench it throws in things when TWO kilns break at the same time! Many members chip in to keep the studio running - being a potter is about more than playing in clay!
Special thanks to Stone Thrown Pottery for developing mad skills to get new controllers installed in these two kilns. And thanks to Clay-King.com for stellar customer service and having supplies in stock and ready to go!

Today turned into “shelf day” at the studio. We made some great progress cleaning up our shelves. Our members have been very busy making birdhouses, planters, and so much more. Spring is on the way!
