a different R&D project … 3D modeling the 1956 Kodak Stereo Camera to design the digital stereo camera retroconversion 3D printed parts needed to fit 2 camera sensors, CPU boards, batteries, etc in the vintage camera chassis.
Plan is to build a 12mpix stereo still camera and a HD stereo video camera.

"... The Kodak Stereo Camera was a 35mm film stereo camera produced between 1954 and 1959. Similar to the Stereo Realist, the camera employed two lenses to take twin shots of scenes, which could then be viewed in dedicated image viewers. The lenses supported adjustable apertures and variable shutter speeds. The camera had a reputation for being easy to use, and sold approximately 100,000 units during the time it was produced.

It used 35mm slide film to produce stereo pair images in the standard 5P Realist format. This allowed Kodak Stereo Camera owners to use most accessories and services originally designed for the Stereo Realist. It was the second best selling stereo camera of the 1950s era, eclipsed only by the Stereo Realist.

The DigiLex camera project has interesting challenges including the joining of tech that is 60 years old to brand new tech.
Example: where is the optical center of the image from the lens with respect to the camera box AND the actual sensor circuit board?
Turns out the center of the sensor image-wise is NOT exactly the physical center.
Owen, our Head of Engineering, is on it!
This shows the actual light cone from the 5.5mm pizr vignetting to determine the empiracle optical center and superimposed is the sensor info from the Sony data sheet.

A little teaser of the development work on the DigiLex V2 camera (target for sale June/July 2023)
Engineering wiz Owen G created this test fixture to allow us to determine the precise placement of the new sensor from the fl**ge of lenses. Because film and sensors have different optical characteristics we can’t just use the published fl**ge focal distances for D mount (and later C mount) lenses when building the sensor circuit board adapter plate. Thus, with empirical testing we will determine the sweet spot and then also allow for some adjustment in the production cameras.

Great news! We are rebooting the DigiLex digital Bolex retroconversions because have sourced a Sony sensor that will make the cameras meet the image standards we insist on!
(we stopped production because the Omnivision sensors we were sourcing had limitations that made using the vintage optics not color accurate.)

Stay tuned as we retool and start getting the new model protypes built and put them through field testing.
If interested in buying one of these new models, PM us to get on a waiting list.
We are targeting June 2023 to ship first units.

Just got back from Racine visiting Douglas Wick. We are finishing up the digital version of his Film “Requiem for the Venetian” (it is actually a film and slide multimedia show).
Doug created this Film in 1977 on Kodachrome Super8, 8mm film and 35mm slides.
The film show the history and ultimate demolition of the Venetian Theatre in Racine. The Venetian was built in 1927 at cost equivalent to $17 million, in today’s dollars.
The clip shows how this is a performance piece as much as a film.
Over the years Doug has done this show more than 60 times including out in LA to some big wigs in the movie industry.
The challenge is the original film is 45 years old, projectors are getting old and breaking and it is a complicated and very complex to do the show and Doug is the only one that can do it it so … we are making it a digital film.
We digitized the original Super 8 movie and 35mm slides a year back.
We sat down and edited the digital version, yesterday and put in many of the finishing tweaks/edits.
We are almost done!
(in couple weeks more, after final edits, it’ll be done and made available to stream. )
