This is a dark and rather sad image of young Roseanna McCoy, the daughter of Randolph and Sally McCoy. According to family history, it was Roseanna who had the legendary and doomed love affair with Johnson “Johnse” Hatfield, the first child of Devil Anse and Levisa (Levicy) Hatfield.

A friend of the Hatfield and McCoy Feud page, Paul McClelland, once posted about the faded image and stated, “There is a lot of sadness in her eyes," as another Feud page member, Jimmy Lou Enlow, added, “Both her and her young man [Johnse] suffered a lot of deaths on both sides of their families. It was a miracle that they even fell in love. I imagine, with so much pressure from both families, it was no surprise that they didn't stay together—but they probably always loved each other … for always.”

Unfortunately, it was Roseanna and Johnse’s romance that was described as a young love that could never be.

The Greenbrier River is a major tributary of the New River, stretching approximately 162 miles (261 kilometers) through the southeastern region of West Virginia in the United States. It is one of the longest undammed rivers in the state and flows through a predominantly rural and mountainous landscape within the Appalachian region.

The river originates in the higher elevations of Pocahontas County, where its headwaters form from the confluence of smaller mountain streams. From there, it flows generally southwest through Greenbrier Valley, passing communities such as Marlinton, Lewisburg, and Ronceverte. The river eventually joins the New River at the town of Hinton.

Known for its clear waters and scenic surroundings, the Greenbrier River supports a variety of recreational activities, including fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and tubing. It is also paralleled for much of its length by the Greenbrier River Trail, a popular route for hiking and cycling that follows a former railroad corridor. The river plays an important ecological role in the region, providing habitat for diverse fish and wildlife species, and it remains an important natural resource for southeastern West Virginia.
