Here are a few quick reminders for families spending time outdoors this spring and summer:
• Poison ivy can cause an itchy, red rash after skin comes into contact with oils from the plant.
• The rash itself cannot spread from person to person.
• The plant oil can be spread from one person's skin or on clothing or other objects until the skin and any other contaminated items are thoroughly washed.
• Calamine lotion, cool compresses, and hydrocortisone cream can help soothe itching while the rash heals.
If your child develops severe swelling, facial involvement, or worsening symptoms, contact your pediatrician.
