Historically, the devotion to the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel among Catholic laypeople began with the tradition of Marian apparitions and the promise of the Scapular to St. Simon Stock.
From around 1400, Carmelite religious orders began referencing the laity’s practice of wearing the Scapular, which was believed to be a sign of the Virgin Mary’s promise of eternal salvation. Devotional scapulars are symbols of popular piety, representing the wearer’s commitment to a confraternity, a saint, or a way of life, and serve as a reminder of that promise.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel is also reference to saving souls from purgatory and bringing them to heaven to share in the eternal glory of God.
