The Bee Store has been welcoming its customers now for over 4 years! It has been a wonderful journey and we thank all of you for supporting us, because without you, we would not have our business.

Bees are very complex creatures, but they have 2 basic imperatives: 1) survive next winter 2) propagate the species. When a colony of honey bees completes its survival checklist- plenty of brood (developing bees), plenty of nurses to tend to the brood, a well organized brood nest with plenty of supplies for the next generation - they move to imperative #2. We call this a swarm. The mother queen departs the hive with most of the older bees. This cloud of bees can be upwards of 30,000 bees. When they initially swarm or “cast,” they gather near the mother hive to organize and regroup. At this point, some complicated decisions are made to determine where the new home will be. We often see this as a large cluster of bees on a tree or bush or fence. The cluster is relatively harmless, as it is not defending its home. As beekeepers, we try to manage our colonies to prevent swarming, but it’s easier said than done, especially in a wonky spring like we have been having here in the DMV. If you see a large cluster of honeybees near you, please call your local beekeepers' association for removal. You can always call us at The Bee Store to help direct you - 571-398-0404.
