The Saint Augustine Garrison will be conducting our next Changing of the Guard on Saturday evening January 21, 2017. In order to portray the real history of Saint Augustine and to enhance the visitors' experience to the Ancient City, this month's event will include a day long muster of troops and militia at the Colonial Quarter, located at 33 Saint George St. Interested visitors and residents will be able to watch the Soldados master their military drills and observe our musket volleys on the Quarter's grounds. While there our historical interpreters will be only too happy to answer questions and pose for photographs.
If you haven't seen a "Changing of the Guard" you are missing the recreation of a real historic event, an event that would have taken place every evening in 1740 Colonial Saint Augustine. If you haven't seen one recently, come on down to Saint George Street and see the color and pageantry once again. Starting at 6:10, the first group of historians will march along Saint George Street to the front of the "Government House". Observe the soldiers as the story of the Changing of the Guard is presented to the audience. The second group of soldiers will follow the first at 6:20. Both groups of soldiers will meet in front of the "Government House" where the ceremony will be performed. A musket volley will be presented for the enjoyment of the crowd. The audience is then encouraged to meet the historians, ask questions and take photographs. The soldiers, militia and civilian colonists will then march back along Saint George Street and end up back at the Colonial Quarter.
