As Christmas approaches, we have much to celebrate:

-The residents of The Hobart Inn are safe and warm, pets included.

-The businesses that were located on the first floor have found a new location beginning January 1st.

-The building itself is disconnected from electric power and water, making the possibility of further damage much less likely.

-The support of our community (near and far) has made this transition much more humane than it would otherwise have been.

A few days of rest and replenishment and we will be back at it, getting everyone more permanently settled and pursuing new goals.

For now, let there be Peace.

One of the ways that support for the fundraiser to help the displaced residents of The Hobart Inn has been amazing is that we have received donations from so many places, near and far.

Two Countries: USA and France

Nine States: UT, NJ, RI, NH, MA, PA, VA, MD

Thirteen New York Counties: Delaware, Schoharie, Otsego, Erie, Albany, Ulster, Chatauqua, Suffolk, Chenango, Rennselaer, Dutchess, New York, Kings.

Thirty-one New York Villages, Towns and Cities: Hobart, Stamford, South Kortright, Cooperstown, Delhi, Arkville, Delancey, New Kingston, Jefferson, Walton, Tonawanda, Bloomville, Andes, Summit, Albany, Margaretville, Pine Hill, Franklin, East Meredith, Jamestown, Greenlawn, Davenport, Roxbury, Oneonta, Mount Upton, Valley Falls, Sag Harbor, Denver, Hyde Park, West End, Harpersfield.

What we have learned in the past 8 days is that Community is a big word, indeed.

Today was calm at The Hobart Inn.

As of 7 PM yesterday, all people and pets had been safely evacuated. All are safe and warm. None of them is in a homeless shelter or anything like that. Most are not in a permanent place /final destination.

Remedying that is obviously Phase Next, which will begin in earnest tomorrow, when offices (and banks) reopen.

The monies so graciously donated will help us bridge gaps between what is needed and what is available through agencies and organizations.

Hopefully the building itself will be allowed now to rest without sustaining further damage until it can be rescued and restored.

Everything in good time.

I sat down half an hour ago to post something here and I have started over more than a dozen times now.

I once read that if you have writer's block you should not just sit there staring at the blank page. Rather, you should write about what it feels like to have writer's block.

So here I am, I guess, writing to you about how I don't know what to write to you.

So here's the thing: we had a generous matching gift in play on Thursday, designed to help us reach our goal of raising $20,000, and that happened, which was amazing.

Once the match was made yesterday morning, I stopped promoting the fundraiser and we celebrated the incredible generosity and compassion of our community.

Since that time, we have received an additional $2005.

And that is why I don't know what to write. I can't think of another way to say how amazingly, wonderfully grateful we are.

Transitions are difficult and complicated and tiring, sometimes frightening, but good things are happening because we are all working together from a place of compassion and kindness and respect.

This building has been through many, many transitions. I don't know the personal hisotry of each current resident, but I have a feeling that they, too, have experienced transitions.

And I know for sure that the people who keep the shops and the library each have been through their fair share of ups and downs.

The past is the past. It's the future that inspires me.

Today was long. Let's see if we can all find a spot to rest for a while.

Tomorrow, as they say, is the first day of the rest of all of our lives -- this building, the residents, the shopkeepers and librarians, friends and neighbors, all alike. Let's see what we can make of it, shall we?

Thank you, everyone.
