Gretsch Synchromatic Nightmare Neck Re-Set, Part 3: With the body and neck reunited it was time for new frets, a new nut and general setup tasks. The cool reproduction bridge that Brenda sent in the case required only a little bit of shaping to match the guitar’s top, and after adjusting the radius of the saddle and changing the compensation just a bit, it was time for the guitar to have strings on it for the first time in roughly 45 years. It has a sweet, louder-than-anticipated voice and nice low action with a good range of adjustment at the bridge. After sitting at pitch for 48 hours and a close look at the bracing, neck joint and other sensitive areas, it was time for the old Gretsch to make its way home. This was a challenging and satisfying project, and it was a pleasure to see it completed.

Gretsch Synchromatic Nightmare Neck Re-Set, Part 2: The glue holding the fretboard to the neck was brittle and old, maintaining a tenuous grasp above the 7th fret while being free below it. With a gentle tug it very willingly separated completely. This meant a side mission of sorts before the joint could finally be fit, but in the end this was a better path forward. The maple block below the fretboard extension was scrapped and replaced completely with new wood. It had already been thinned down significantly in the 80’s and basically crumbled apart once the fretboard was removed. With a new piece of maple fitted and the fretboard reattached, some color matching, touchup and dry time, the neck was ready to put back on the body. Final adjustment of the dovetail yielded a healthy neck angle once again and the neck was re-attached with hot hide glue. With the guitar in one piece again it’s ready for more the more straightforward tasks of re-fretting and setting up. Thanks for reading, this has been an exciting project to move through. More soon!

Little restoration fun on this old Harmony: new tuners, a re-fret, new nut and bridge, and a sweet reproduction pick guard. It’s strung with extra light strings and nice low action and is a really fun old guitar!
